Chapter 2 - Bloodlines and Blackmail

The glowing screen of the phone felt like an open furnace in the chilled kitchen. Julian snatched the device, his thumb shaking so violently he nearly dropped it onto the floor. The message remained etched against the glass, glaring back at him with unrelenting malice. He stared at the words, reading them once, twice, three times, until the syntax blurred into nonsensical shapes.

"Julian? What does it say?" Elena took a hesitant step forward, balancing the baby with one arm while reaching out to touch his elbow. The sequin fabric of her gown scraped softly against his forearm, a brittle sound that snapped him out of his trance.

"It doesn't make sense," Julian muttered, his eyes darting frantically toward Beatrice.

The older woman had not moved an inch. The burgundy silk of her dress caught the dim overhead spotlights, giving her the appearance of an executioner waiting patiently for the blade to fall. She watched Julian's face drain of color, her own expression devoid of warmth, remorse, or surprise.

"Show it to me, Julian," Elena begged, her tears starting to dry into sticky tracks on her cheeks. "Is it about the woman from the clinic? The nurse who delivered him?"

"No," Julian choked out. He slowly turned the screen so Elena could see the glowing text.

Elena gasped, staggering backward until her hip caught the edge of the kitchen island. The baby stirred, whimpering softly before settling back against her chest. "Your... your real mother? What kind of sick game is this? Beatrice is your mother! She raised you. She gave you this entire estate!"

"Did she?" Julian whispered.

He locked eyes with the woman standing by the archway. Beatrice’s expression shifted, not into panic, but into something infinitely colder: absolute contempt. She slowly lowered her arms, her diamond rings glinting in the pale light.

"You were always too sentimental, Julian," Beatrice said, her voice smooth and devoid of tremor. "Just like your father. He believed that blood could be bought, that silence could be negotiated with bank accounts and offshore trusts. But blood always finds a way to surface."

"Who sent this message, Mother?" Julian took a step toward her, his voice rising into a roar that echoed down the long hallway. "Who is holding someone? Who was in this house before I walked through that door?"

Beatrice reached into the pocket of her burgundy dress and produced an old, tarnished silver locket, its surface scarred by deep scratches. She didn't hand it to him; she let it dangle from her manicured fingers like a pendulum.

"The woman who gave birth to you didn't die in that hospital fire thirty years ago, Julian," Beatrice stated, every syllable landing like a hammer blow. "She survived. And she just walked out the back gate with the evidence that will strip you of every cent you own."

Julian’s breath seized in his throat. Before he could lunge for the locket, the front entrance slammed open, followed by the heavy, hurried footsteps of men approaching the kitchen.
