Chapter 5 - The Key on the Stone

The metallic ping of the ignition key hitting the marble reverberated like an explosion in the confined space of the kitchen. Detective Vance’s eyes snapped to the floor, instantly locking onto the branded silver fob. The two officers behind him stepped forward in unison, their hands instinctively dropping toward their utility belts.
"Nobody move," Vance commanded, his voice stripped of all personal familiarity. He stepped around the island, pulled a pair of latex gloves from his pocket, and knelt to retrieve the key.
"Julian... what is that?" Elena gasped, her voice trembling so violently she could barely enunciate. "Why was that in his blanket? Where did that come from?"
"I don't know!" Julian cried out, raising his hands in surrender as the officers closed in on him. "I swear to God, Elena, I’ve never seen that key before! Someone put it there!"
"Put it in a newborn's blanket?" Vance asked, rising to his full height with the key sealed inside an evidence pouch. He stared at Julian with deep disappointment. "Julian, this key belongs to the secondary vehicle in your private stall. The one currently wrapped around a telephone pole at the base of the hill."
"It's a setup!" Julian shouted, his chest heaving as one of the officers took his arm, turning him around toward the counter. "Mother, tell them! Tell them who was here before I arrived!"
Beatrice watched with folded arms, her face a mask of sorrowful pity. "Julian, darling, please don't make this harder than it already is. If you tell the truth, we have lawyers who can argue temporary psychosis. The stress of the birth, the recent revelations about the inheritance... people understand when an heir breaks under pressure."
"You monstrous liar!" Julian lunged forward, but the officer shoved him against the marble island, snapping cold steel cuffs around his wrists. "She did this! She orchestrated the whole thing!"
Elena stood petrified, watching her husband being restrained just feet away from their screaming newborn. She wanted to rush forward, to scream at the police, to pull Julian back, but Beatrice’s voice cut through the chaos like a whip.
"Elena," Beatrice said, her tone suddenly chillingly gentle. "Hand the child to me. You are clearly in shock."
"No," Elena said instinctively, taking two steps back toward the patio glass doors. "Don't touch him."
"Elena, please," Beatrice murmured, stepping closer, her hand outstretched. "You don't want to drop him. Not after everything we went through to ensure his safe arrival."
Julian struggled against the officer’s grip, shouting over his shoulder. "Elena, run! Don't let her touch the baby! Look at the safe, Elena! Check the safe in the study!"
Detective Vance pushed Julian toward the archway. "Let's go, Sterling. You can explain your theories downtown."
As the officers dragged Julian out into the storm, his frantic shouts swallowed by the thundering rain, Beatrice turned slowly toward Elena. The room was suddenly devoid of men, left only with the cold silence of the two women and the crying infant.

Beatrice stopped inches away from Elena, her smile entirely vanished.
"Now, Elena," Beatrice whispered, her eyes dead and dark. "You are going to tell me exactly which safe Julian was talking about, or you will find out who that baby really belongs to."
