Chapter 11 - The Ticking Clock

Julian stood entirely motionless, the air leaving his lungs in a cold, painful rush. The childhood memories of sterile clinic rooms, the bitter-tasting liquid medicines, the long afternoons of nausea—it hadn't been an illness. It had been an execution of his future.
"She poisoned me," Julian whispered, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the edge of the steel table. "My entire life... my career, my marriage, my health... she orchestrated every piece of it."
"She’s an architect of human lives, Julian," Arthur said grimly. "She needed you alive to hold the trust, but incapable of passing it on without her intervention. When you and Clara went to her private fertility clinic, she swapped the donor sample with my preserved material. That way, the genetic markers would still trace to the Vance grandfather lineage, keeping the trust intact under her ultimate supervision."
The door to the inner room opened, and Dr. Mercer stepped out, wiping her hands on a clean towel. Her expression was solemn.
"How is she?" Julian asked immediately, pushing past his own grief. "How is my wife?"
"She has an early uterine infection, likely introduced during the rushed labor or the escape," Mercer said candidly. "Her fever is rising. I’ve administered broad-spectrum antibiotics, but she needs intensive clinical monitoring within the next twelve hours, or she risks septic shock. The infant is healthy, but dehydrated."
Julian looked at Arthur, his eyes burning with a desperate resolve. "We can't stay here hiding in the woods. Clara needs an ICU."
"If you bring her to a hospital now, Victoria’s legal injunction activates," Arthur warned. "The moment Clara is admitted, child protective services will seize Maya. The court hearing is set for 9:00 AM in the county probate court. Victoria has submitted falsified affidavits claiming Clara fled the hospital in a drug-induced psychosis."
Julian looked at the mechanical wall clock above the door. It was 3:45 AM.
"Then we don't go to a hospital," Julian said, his voice hardening into steel. "We go to the probate court. We blow this open in front of the judge before she can seal the records."

"You don't have the original files, Julian," Arthur said. "Victoria has the master server at the Vance corporate headquarters. Without that data, it’s your word against the most powerful woman in the state."
Julian looked down at the leather-bound ledger on the table. "She has the servers. But you have the original keys."
