Chapter 2 - Bloodline Mirage

Julian stepped into the room smelling of expensive cologne and damp rain, his tie loosened, eyes bloodshot from travel. His gaze swept from Clara’s defensive posture to his mother’s pale face, finally locking onto the document trembling in Victoria’s hands.
"What is going on here?" Julian asked, his voice low, tired. "Clara, why did you have the nurse call security on my mother?"
"Ask her what she’s reading, Julian," Clara said, stepping back until the edge of the mattress hit the back of her knees. She shifted Maya into the crook of her left arm, shielding the newborn's tiny face from his view.
Julian reached out, plucking the paper from his mother’s paralyzed grip. Victoria didn't resist; her gaze was fixed on the linoleum floor, completely unresponsive to her son's presence. Julian's eyes raced across the text. Clara watched the blood drain from his cheeks, leaving him looking hollow, an echo of the confident man she had married three years ago.
"Paternal probability: zero percent," Julian read aloud, his voice cracking on the final syllable. He looked up at Clara, betrayal blazing in his eyes. "You told me she was mine. You swore it before we did the in-vitro treatments."
"She is the result of the procedure, Julian!" Clara cried out, her throat burning. "I didn't touch another man. I used the clinic your mother chose! The Vance private fertility center!"
Julian stared, uncomprehending. "Then why does it say this?"
"Read the secondary genetic match at the bottom," Clara said. "The lab cross-referenced your profile with the national donor registry because of a marker anomaly. They found a full sibling match. And a parental match that didn't include Victoria Vance."
Julian lowered the paper, turning slowly toward his mother. Victoria remained silent, her hands clasped tightly over her gold belt buckle, her lips pressed into a thin, bloodless seam.

"Mother," Julian whispered, the room falling into suffocating stillness. "Whose baby is this... and who the hell am I?"
Victoria slowly raised her head, her eyes devoid of warmth. "Get your coat, Julian. We are leaving. Now."
