Chapter 15 - The New Registry

The mahogany doors of County Probate Courtroom 4 swung open to the blinding morning sunlight.
The corridor outside was a storm of flashing cameras, reporters, and uniform officers. Victoria Vance, her head held low, was escorted down the central aisle in handcuffs, flanked by state investigators. The charges read aloud to the media echoed off the high marble ceilings: kidnapping, medical tampering, fraud, and corporate embezzlement spanning over three decades.
Clara sat on the wooden gallery bench, an intravenous antibiotic port taped neatly to the back of her hand, but her color had returned. In her arms, Maya slept peacefully, oblivious to the storm of history that had almost swallowed her whole.
Julian walked back from the clerk’s desk, carrying a crisp, newly printed document bearing the state’s gold embossed seal. He sat down beside Clara, slipping his arm around her shoulder, resting his forehead against hers for a long, quiet moment.
"Is it done?" Clara asked, her voice steady and warm.
"It’s done," Julian replied, unfolding the document.
The birth certificate had been officially corrected. Under the paternal line, Julian’s name remained, not by genetic coercion, but by legal adoption and voluntary paternity, sealed by the judge's order. Beside them, Arthur Vance stood near the courtroom window, looking out over the city he had been exiled from for half his life.
Julian stood up, walking toward the older man. "Arthur."
Arthur turned, a nervous, hesitant expression on his weathered face. "I suppose I should head north. The state will want my deposition for the trial, but after that... I don't know what place I have here."
Julian looked down at the little girl in Clara’s arms, then back at his biological father.
"She has your eyes, Arthur," Julian said softly, extending a hand. "And she needs a grandfather who knows the truth."

Arthur looked at Julian's outstretched hand, his weathered features breaking into a tearful, genuine smile for the first time in thirty years. He clasped his son's hand, pulling him into a fierce, silent embrace.
Clara watched them from the bench, looking down at Maya's peaceful face. The Vance name had finally been stripped of its gilded cage; what remained was simply a family, broken and bruised, but entirely free.
