Chapter 1 - The Weight of Blood

The grand dining hall of the Vance Manor was built to swallow whispers, but the sound of five-year-old Lily’s knees striking the cold Italian marble echoed like thunder.

Ethan Vance stood at the threshold, his towering frame framed by the arched golden doorway. His deep burgundy tailored suit caught the amber glare of the towering crystal chandeliers. He did not run; a man of his stature never hurried, yet the sheer atmospheric pressure in the room plummeted with every measured step he took. The male guest in the midnight-blue tuxedo, Julian, took one look at Ethan’s obsidian eyes and instinctively retreated three paces, knocking his silver goblet aside in panic.

Across the banquet table, Victoria adjusted her diamond drop earrings, her lips curling into an icy sneer. Her black silk gown rustled against the velvet runner. ""Control your mongrel, Ethan,"" she spat, tossing her linen napkin onto an untouched plate of truffles. ""The head of the family table is reserved for legitimate blood. A stray bastard dragged in from the gutter does not sit where my guests breathe.""

Ethan ignored her. He bent down, the fabric of his burgundy trousers brushing against scattered white rose petals that had fallen during the scuffle. Lily was trembling, curled into a tight defensive ball, her pale blush-pink dress dusted with gray chalk from the floorboards. When Ethan’s massive, calloused hand rested upon her small, shivering shoulder, the girl flinched—then recognized the faint scent of cedarwood and winter smoke.

""Look at me, Lily,"" Ethan said softly, his voice a low, gravelly vibration that belonged to a protector, not a tyrant.

Lily raised her chin. Tears clung to her dark eyelashes, reflecting the chandelier lights. On her collarbone, half-hidden beneath the frayed neckline of her dress, hung a silver chain bearing an oxidized signet ring.

Ethan’s jaw locked. The muscles along his neck tightened until veins corded beneath his unbuttoned collar. He rose to his full height, turning slowly toward Victoria. The socialite took an involuntary half-step back, her aristocratic composure slipping as Ethan reached into his breast pocket and drew out a pristine, black leather ledger.

""You took her chair,"" Ethan said, his voice flat, dangerously devoid of volume. ""You bruised her skin. And you dared to call her blood illegitimate.""

""She is nothing!"" Victoria hissed, though her fingers trembled as she reached for her wine glass. ""Her mother died an outcast in an alleyway three years ago! You have no proof of lineage, Ethan. The Vance Council will never ratify your claim over this estate based on an orphan's fairy tale!""

Ethan tossed the black ledger onto the center of the mahogany table. It slid across the polished wood, knocking Victoria's crystal glass over. Deep crimson wine bled into the white damask cloth, pooling toward her manicured hands.

""That isn't an orphan's tale, Victoria,"" Ethan murmured. ""That is the forensic audit of your mother’s hospital account—dated the exact night you switched the infant cribs.""

Victoria froze, the blood draining completely from her face. Before she could breathe, a sharp click sounded from the grand doorway behind Ethan, followed by the metallic cocking of a firearm.
