Chapter 15 - The Dawn of a Dynasty

The winter sun broke completely over the horizon, flooding the 50th-floor boardroom in a warm, unbroken wash of golden light.

The bloodstains on Ethan’s burgundy suit seemed less like wounds now, and more like battle armor worn by a king who had defended his kingdom. The chaos had settled; the hallway outside was filled with forensic investigators and honest men in uniform, securing every ledger and restoring every rightful title to the North Vance name.

Ethan turned away from the window and walked back to the head of the conference table.

Lily was still sitting in the massive executive chair. Her small legs dangled over the edge, her tiny hands folded neatly over the oversized coat. She looked up at him as he approached, her hazel eyes clear and peaceful for the first time since the night began.

""Uncle Ethan?"" she asked softly. ""Is the monster gone?""

Ethan knelt beside the armrest, eye-to-eye with the girl. He gently reached out and smoothed a stray lock of wavy brown hair away from her forehead.

""All of them, Lily,"" Ethan answered, his deep voice filled with absolute finality. ""Every last one.""

Lily looked down at the heavy signet ring resting on her thumb, then looked around the vast, glass-walled room that overlooked the entire waking metropolis.

""Does this mean we can go home now?"" she whispered. ""To Mommy's garden?""

""We will rebuild Mommy's garden,"" Ethan promised, his voice thick with unshakeable resolve. ""We will tear down the high walls, we will plant the white roses, and no one will ever lock the gates on you again.""

Lily smiled, a radiant, innocent smile that banished the cold shadows of Vance Manor forever. She reached deep into the inner pocket of her ruined blush-pink dress, past the torn lace and the dust of the coal chute.

""Uncle Ethan?""

""Yes, little bird?""

""I have one more thing,"" Lily said, pulling out a small, worn photograph that had been folded four times. ""Mommy said I should only give this to you when the sun was completely up.""

Ethan took the fragile paper and carefully unfolded it.

His breath caught in his throat. The world seemed to stop spinning.

The photograph showed his brother, smiling beside Lily’s mother on the terrace of the old estate. But in the background, standing in the shadows of the veranda, was a tall figure whose face was partially obscured by a wide-brimmed hat—holding an infant wrapped in blue blankets.

Ethan’s gaze locked onto the inscription scribbled on the back in his brother’s unmistakable handwriting:

Ethan. Lily was never an only child. Find her twin brother before Marcus's foreign buyers do.

May you like

Ethan slowly raised his head, staring out at the vast, sprawling city below as the dawn turned to blazing fire.

The war wasn't over. It had only just begun."
