Chapter 11 - The Golden Cage

""You sanctimonious fools!"" Sterling roared, whipping a compact revolver from beneath the mahogany desk and leveling it directly at Lily. ""You think you can dismantle forty years of my work with a child's bedtime story?!""
The entire boardroom erupted in pandemonium. Directors dove beneath the heavy table, knocking over leather armchairs, water glasses shattering across the polished floor.
Ethan didn't duck. He didn't flinch. In a fraction of a second, he shifted his body, stepping entirely into the crosshairs to shield Lily behind his muscular frame.
""Drop the weapon, Arthur,"" Ethan commanded, his voice dropping an octave, deadlier than the gun pointed at his chest. ""There are four sniper teams on the roof of the opposing tower painting your forehead right now. Pull that trigger, and you won't even hear the round that takes your skull.""
A tiny, vibrating crimson dot materialized on Sterling’s left temple, dancing across his skin.
Sterling’s eyes darted toward the massive floor-to-ceiling glass behind him. Across the street, five hundred yards away, the morning sun glinted off the high-caliber rifles mounted on the parapets of the Vance Financial Center.
""I built this empire!"" Sterling screamed, his spit flying across the desk, his finger trembling violently on the curved trigger. ""Your father was weak! Your brother was a poet who cared more about philanthropy than profit margins! I was the one who hid the offshore liabilities! I was the one who kept the Vance name untarnished while you were fighting corporate wars overseas!""
""You didn't protect the name,"" Ethan said, taking a slow, heavy step forward, closing the distance despite the gun. ""You fed on it like a parasite. You murdered my brother. You poisoned Lily’s mother with synthetic paralytics over eighteen months to make it look like organ failure. You turned our family home into a butcher's shop.""
""And what will you do, Ethan?"" Sterling laughed hysterically, tears of pure rage pooling in his bloodshot eyes. ""Shoot me? In front of thirty witnesses? In front of the little orphan princess? You become a murderer on international television! The stock will collapse to zero! The Vance dynasty will die in the dirt with me!""
""You misunderstand me, Arthur,"" Ethan said softly, stopping just three feet from the barrel. He leaned down, his eyes locking onto Sterling’s dilated pupils with predatory intimacy. ""I don't need to shoot you.""
Ethan reached up with his uninjured right hand and casually pushed the gun barrel away from his chest, forcing it toward the ceiling.
""Listen,"" Ethan whispered.
From the streets fifty stories below, the wail of dozens of sirens rose in a deafening crescendo. Through the shattered double doors of the boardroom, six agents in dark blue Federal jackets entered, led by the Chief Assistant District Attorney.

""Arthur Sterling,"" the lead prosecutor announced, raising a thick stack of federal arrest warrants. ""You are under arrest for corporate treason, bank fraud, wire fraud, and first-degree conspiracy to commit murder.""
Sterling's hand went limp. The revolver clattered harmlessly onto the mahogany desk.
