Chapter 1 - The Flatline

The cold marble of Courtroom 4B reflected the amber recessed chandeliers above, but Captain Lucas Vance saw only the waxen pallor spreading across Clara Sterling’s lips. She lay motionless along the center aisle, her cream suit stark against the dark grain of polished wood. Around them, murmurs swelled like a rising tide.

Lucas ignored the gavel pounding above. His fingers pressed deep into her carotid artery. Nothing. No flutter. No desperate thread of life fighting through her veins.

""She’s faking it!"" Eleanor Cross’s voice cut through the air, shrill and venomous. The opposing counsel marched from behind her mahogany table, her plum-colored jacket stiff as armor. ""Your Honor, this is an orchestrated theatrical stunt designed to derail cross-examination!""

""Clear the aisle!"" Lucas roared, stripping off his dress jacket in one violent motion. The gold braid and service ribbons struck the marble with a dull clatter. He locked his elbows, intertwining his fingers directly over Clara’s sternum. He drove downward with the practiced, mechanical rhythm drilled into him across three tours as a combat surgeon. One, two, three, four.

Her ribs yielded under the pressure. Lucas leaned over her face, checking her airway. A faint, almost imperceptible scent caught in his throat—bitter almond, masked beneath cheap lavender perfume.

Cyanide derivative. Not a heart attack. An execution.

""Bailiff, secure the doors! Nobody leaves this room!"" Judge Harrison barked, finally grasping the gravity of the soldier’s fury.

Lucas delivered two rescue breaths, tasting the chemical sting on her lips. Beneath his palms, Clara’s chest hitched. A shudder racked her frame, followed by a violent, choking cough. Her hazel eyes flickered open, pupils blown wide with terror. She grabbed Lucas’s wrist with surprising strength, pulling him down until her lips brushed the shell of his ear.

""The briefcase,"" she gasped, blood speckling her pale lips. ""Lucas... the judge is in on it.""

Before Lucas could react, the courtroom plunged into total, suffocating darkness.
