Chapter 5 - Subterranean Shadows

The service stairs behind the judge's chambers plunged four levels down into the humid bowels of the city’s forgotten infrastructure. Steam hissed from rusted pipes, filling the narrow corridor with sulfurous fog.

Lucas led the way, his service weapon drawn, every sense tuned to the rhythm of dripping water and distant machinery. Behind him, Clara moved with stubborn resolve, her fingers digging into his shoulder for balance.

""How long have you known about the unit, Clara?"" Lucas asked, his voice low, slicing through the hum of the ventilation shafts. ""They told me the nerve agent test in Sector 4 was an insurgent mortar strike.""

""It was synthetic,"" Clara answered, her voice tight with strain. ""Manufactured by Apex Bio-Defense. Eleanor Cross is their chief legal counsel. They didn't just test it on your men, Lucas. They used the trial today to finalize a defense contract. I was their lead toxicologist until I realized the trial data was falsified.""

Lucas clenched his teeth so hard his jaw ached. Five of his men had died in agony in that desert valley. He had spent four years believing he had failed to triage them in time.

Ahead, the service tunnel opened into an expansive subterranean platform—a decommissioned 1940s subway station, illuminated by portable halogen work lights.

At the center of the platform stood Eleanor Cross, surrounded by four heavily armed private contractors. She held a ruggedized laptop connected to the aluminum briefcase, her severed prize dangling by a thin chain around her wrist.

A private rail car sat idling on the tracks, its diesel engine rumbling like a caged beast.

""It’s too late, Lucas,"" Clara whispered, pulling him back behind a concrete pillar. ""The upload has already started. Look at the satellite uplink array on the rail car.""
