Chapter 15 - The Unbroken Line

Chaos erupted on the pier, but not a single shot was fired by the mercenaries. Faced with an airborne gunship and federal tactical teams breaching the dock from two directions, Marcus’s private contractors threw down their weapons, dropping to their knees with hands raised.

Federal marshals swarmed the dock, securing the prisoners in rapid, rehearsed precision.

Lucas felt the zip-ties cut from his wrists. A military paramedic threw a thick thermal blanket over his trembling shoulders, while two others rushed to Clara, stabilizing her breathing and wrapping her in foil insulation.

Marcus Vance was forced onto his knees, his hands cuffed behind his back, his wool coat soaked in the harbor mud. He looked up at Lucas as his nephew walked over, flanked by two armed federal agents.

Lucas reached down to his right combat boot, clicked the concealed release, and pulled out the undamaged, waterproof hard drive. He held it up before his uncle’s face.

""Everything is here,"" Lucas said, his voice cutting through the thrum of the hovering helicopter. ""The test manifests. The offshore accounts. The signatures authorizing Sector 4. It’s over, Marcus. There are no more strings to pull.""

Marcus didn't reply. His eyes hollowed as the marshals hauled him to his feet and marched him toward the waiting transport vehicles.

Lucas walked slowly toward Clara. She sat on the rear bumper of an emergency ambulance, sipping warm water from a paper cup, her face pale but alive. When she saw him approach, a faint, genuine smile broke through her exhaustion.

""You look terrible, Captain,"" she said softly.

""I’ve looked worse,"" Lucas replied, sitting down beside her on the metal step. He looked down at his bloodstained dress uniform, the ribbons torn, the fabric soaked in brine and diesel. For four years, a ghost had walked beside him, whispering of guilt and failure in the desert dust.

Now, the ghost was silent.

The morning sun began to pierce through the heavy fog above the harbor, casting a pale gold light across the city skyline. Clara reached out, taking his battered, bandaged hand into hers.

Lucas didn't pull away. He took a long, deep breath of the cold ocean air, watching the sunrise over a world that finally knew the truth."
