Chapter 1 - The Circle of Doubt

The green tatami was cold beneath Maya’s bare soles. Marcus shifted his weight, his black belt swaying against his crisp white dobok. Around them, the gym quieted down, though a couple of students near the wall were still chuckling behind their hands. The Caucasian man with the phone adjusted his angle, waiting for an easy clip to post online. Marcus crossed his heavy arms over his chest, towering over her with deliberate ease.

""You really want to do this now?"" Marcus asked, his voice dripping with condescension. ""First day, fresh off the street, and you think you can step into an elite dojo and set terms? Look around you, Maya. These boys have trained under national champions for years.""

Maya didn't shift her stance. Her posture was relaxed, balanced, center of gravity low and stable. Her black sleeveless training shirt showed the lean, defined muscle forged through years of military hand-to-hand combat and brutal street-level self-defense. She had heard this tone before in every garage gym and private security locker room she had ever stepped foot into.

""I asked if you were ready, Marcus,"" Maya replied quietly, not blinking. ""Are we talking, or are we sparring?""

A murmur ran through the edge of the mat. Marcus let out a dry, dismissive laugh. ""Fine. Standard sparring rules. Light contact. I won't embarrass you on camera.""

He stepped back and tapped his fists together in a formal combat stance. His reach was monstrous, his shoulders broad as a beam. In one swift movement, Marcus closed the distance with a snappy front feint, immediately following it with a heavy right hook intended to brush close enough to startle her into stumbling backward.

Maya didn't flinch. She pivoted on her left heel, ducking cleanly under his shoulder. Before Marcus could reset his hips, her left arm hooked tight around his neck while her foot hooked his ankle in a vicious, perfectly executed sweep.

Gravity took Marcus instantly. The massive fighter slammed hard onto the tatami with a hollow thud that shook the wood base beneath the mat. The laughter died in an instant. The room plunged into dead silence.

Maya stood right above him, her face completely still. Marcus lay on his back, breath knocked out of his lungs, staring up in shock.

Then, from the shadows near the office door, the clapping began.
