Chapter 8 - The Cornered Animal

In a split second of sheer desperation, Marcus shoved the nearest student backward, turned on his heel, and bolted straight for the emergency exit. The heavy crash bar slammed open, the metallic alarm screaming through the entire gymnasium with a shrill, piercing wail.

""Stop him!"" Sterling yelled, panic lacing his polished voice.

Hayes and another officer made a move, but Maya was already flying. Her reaction was instantaneous, honed by thousands of hours of instinctual conditioning. She cleared the mat boundary in two bounds, bursting through the open fire door into the narrow concrete alleyway behind the facility.

Rain had begun to fall, slicking the tarmac and pooling around industrial dumpsters. Marcus was twenty yards ahead, sprinting toward a black sedan parked near the delivery gates. He knew if they seized his phone, the communications would trace back to an illegal private-data broker—and his career would be utterly extinguished.

""Marcus!"" Maya shouted, her boots splashing through freezing puddles. ""Stop running! You're turning a violation into a prison bid!""

Marcus reached the car, fumbling wildly with the door handle. Realizing he had locked the keys inside his gym locker in his haste, he spun around, his back slamming against the vehicle’s driver-side window. Rain plastered his hair to his forehead, and his chest heaved like a bellows.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a tactical folding knife, flicking the thumb stud. A four-inch serrated steel blade snapped into place with a sharp metallic clack.

""Stay back, Thorne!"" Marcus screamed over the wail of the gym alarm behind them. ""You took my students. You took my promotion. You're not taking my life!""

Maya slowed her pace, stopping six paces away. The cold rain soaked her sleeveless shirt, but she didn't shiver. Her hands rose, open and relaxed, her balance rooted in the pavement.

""Put the knife down, Marcus,"" she said, her voice cutting clean through the storm. ""Don't do this.""

With a roar of pure, cornered fury, Marcus lunged forward, aiming the blade straight for her throat.
