Chapter 9 - Edge of the Blade

The blade cleaved the rain-heavy air with lethal precision. Marcus was no novice with a knife; he had cross-trained in Kali and close-quarters edge defense. The tip hissed forward in a diagonal slash aimed at her carotid artery, backed by his full body weight.
Maya didn't retreat into the slick mud. She stepped diagonally forward, invading the space inside the arc of his weapon. Her left forearm crashed into his inner wrist, arresting the kinetic force of the slash before it reached terminal velocity. The wet blade grazed past her shoulder, slicing a clean three-inch tear through the synthetic fabric of her shirt, nicking the skin just enough to draw a thin line of bright red blood.
Before Marcus could withdraw his arm for a secondary thrust, Maya’s right hand caught his thumb and wrist joint in a brutal, twisting lever. She stepped through his center line, dropping her hips, and drove her shoulder directly into his armpit.
The biomechanical leverage was inescapable. Marcus’s wrist bent backward against its anatomical limit. A sickening crack echoed in the damp alley, followed immediately by Marcus’s agonizing scream. The knife tumbled harmlessly into a mud puddle.
Maya didn't stop. She spun him completely around, driving him face-first onto the hood of his own car with a crushing downward elbow strike to his upper back. She pinned his right arm behind his shoulder blades, locking his head against the cold, wet metal with her forearm.
Marcus sobbed in pain, his forehead smearing against the glass. ""Enough... stop... Thorne, please!""
The back door burst open. Hayes, Master Vance, and three SWAT officers rushed into the alley with handguns drawn and holstered, stopping dead in their tracks at the scene before them.

Maya breathed slowly, holding Marcus in complete, effortless immobilization. She looked up through the falling rain at Vance.
""I believe,"" Maya said calmly, ""his lesson is concluded.""
