Chapter 4 - The Unseen Betrayal

Maya followed Marcus’s trail with her eyes as she released Hayes, who sat up rubbing his forearm with a newfound look of quiet respect. ""Again. Pair up. Five reps each, switch weapons,"" Maya ordered the officers, who moved immediately without a shred of their earlier skepticism.
Wiping a bead of sweat from her hairline, Maya stepped toward the hallway leading to the locker rooms under the pretense of grabbing fresh water bottles. The metal door to the fire stairs was cracked open an inch. Through the sliver, Marcus’s agitated voice cut through the ambient echo.
""...I don't care about Vance's reputation,"" Marcus was whispering harshly into his phone. ""The board needs to know she’s a liability. She’s too aggressive, reckless. If she hurts one of these cops, the city pulls our lease.""
A pause on the line. Marcus paced back and forth, the gravel under his shoes crunching through the cracked doorway.
""Yeah, check her background. Thorne. She left the state training facility two years ago under sealed records. Find out why. If there's an incident report or an open investigation, leak it to the board chair before the afternoon review. I want her out before the weekend.""
Maya stood motionless in the shadow of the door frame, her heart beating in a slow, steady rhythm. The sealed records weren't a secret born of failure; they were the result of a whistleblowing scandal involving corrupt private contractors in her previous unit. If that file was twisted by the dojo's conservative board of directors, she wouldn't just lose the instructor position—she would be permanently blacklisted from coaching anywhere in the state.
She stepped back softly onto the rubber runner, never making a sound. As she returned to the mat, Marcus came back through the fire door, wearing a mask of faux professionalism.

""Everything alright with the drills, coach?"" Marcus asked, his tone dripping with false innocence.
""Everything is moving exactly according to plan, Marcus,"" Maya replied, looking directly into his eyes. ""Get on the mat. It's your turn.""
