Chapter 12 - The Secret Pocket

Sarah and Detective Martinez both turned their attention to the six-year-old boy.
""What magic card, sweetheart?"" Sarah asked gently, walking over and sitting on the edge of Julian’s mattress.
Julian sat up, reaching with his uninjured arm toward the navy school blazer. He picked up the heavy wool jacket and turned it inside out.
Beneath the embroidered crest of St. Matthew's Academy was a tiny, hidden interior pocket, sealed with a strip of black Velcro. Julian slid two small fingers inside and pulled out a sleek, micro-SD memory card, no bigger than a fingernail.
""Mommy made this secret pocket before she went to the lake,"" Julian explained, his hazel eyes wide and earnest. ""She said if bad people ever made me feel scared, I should take the little black square from Daddy’s desk camera and hide it here.""
Sarah stared at the micro-SD card in utter shock.
""Julian,"" Sarah breathed, her voice trembling. ""When did you take this?""
""Right after Eleanor pushed me,"" the boy said simply. ""While I was lying on the floor, before she ran down the stairs. The camera by the ceiling had a little red door that was hanging open. A black card was sticking out. I pulled it out and put it in my pocket so she wouldn't throw it away like she did Mommy’s letters.""
Detective Martinez let out a low whistle, immediately pulling an evidence bag from his jacket. ""The local buffer cache didn't just dump to the internal drive—the physical camera unit had its own hardware backup slot.""
Sarah felt a wave of profound relief wash over her. When Eleanor had hacked the system to erase the footage, she had overridden the cloud sync, unaware that the physical camera itself had recorded a raw mirror feed directly to its emergency hardware card.
""Detective,"" Sarah said, handing the microscopic card over with steady fingers. ""That card contains the push on the stairs, the forgery of Clara’s trust documents, and Marcus Thorne’s confession.""
Martinez sealed the plastic bag with a sharp click of adhesive. ""If this card shows what you say it does, Eleanor Vance isn't getting bail. She’s looking at life without parole for attempted murder, conspiracy, and fraud.""
The detective turned on his heel and strode down the hall toward the forensic lab, his radio crackling with urgent orders.
Sarah turned back to Julian, gently wrapping her arms around the boy and kissing the top of his head. ""You are the bravest boy I have ever known, Julian.""
Julian smiled faintly, resting his chin on her shoulder. ""Can we see Daddy now?""
Sarah nodded. Together with a nurse, they wheeled Julian down the quiet, dimly lit corridor to the Intensive Care Unit.
