Chapter 15 - The Dawn of a New House

The heart monitor beside Eleanor’s bed let out a long, uninterrupted tone.
BEEEEEEEP.
The room erupted into sudden motion as doctors and nurses swarmed the bed, pushing Sarah back toward the hallway. Detective Martinez grabbed Sarah’s arm, guiding her out into the quiet corridor as the medical team called the time of death.
Eleanor Vance was dead.
In Detective Martinez’s hand was an evidence bag containing Marcus Thorne’s encrypted smartphone, which had been retrieved from his vehicle at the lake house crash site.
""What did she mean, Detective?"" Sarah asked, her voice shaking slightly. ""What message?""
Martinez looked troubled. He took out an auxiliary audio cable and plugged the phone into a portable speaker on the nurse’s station.
""Forensics bypassed the PIN fifteen minutes ago,"" Martinez said quietly. ""There was a draft voice memo recorded at 8:30 this morning, right before the staircase incident.""
Martinez hit play.
Marcus Thorne’s aristocratic voice filled the quiet hallway, perfectly calm and venomous.
""If anyone is listening to this, it means Eleanor has panicked and made a mess of things. Eleanor was always too clumsy, too driven by petty spite. But to Sarah Cole... if you are the one hearing this, know this: Eleanor and I were not the architects of Clara’s death.""
Sarah froze, her breath catching in her throat.
""We were simply the executors,"" the recording continued, the sound of paper rustling in the background. ""Clara discovered the truth about the Vance conglomerate’s overseas shell companies months before she died. She was going to blow the whistle on the entire syndicate. Arthur couldn't allow that. Arthur Vance is the one who hired me to draft the altered will. Arthur Vance is the one who approved Eleanor’s arrival.""
A cold wave of horror washed over Sarah, more freezing than the lake waters.
""Eleanor thought she was playing Arthur,"" Marcus’s recorded voice chuckled softly. ""Arthur let her believe it. He used her as his blunt instrument to clean his house. Watch your back, little maid. When Arthur recovers his strength, you'll find out that the beast of Vance Manor was never Eleanor.""
The recording clicked off. Silence fell over the corridor like a heavy tombstone.
Detective Martinez stared at the phone, his face pale and shocked. ""My God...""
Sarah turned slowly, looking toward the elevator banks that led back up to the third-floor ICU.
Upstairs, Arthur Vance was waiting, holding his son in his arms, the grieving, victimized billionaire who had just offered Sarah a lifetime of protection.
Julian was up there. Alone with his father.

Sarah didn't speak. She didn't wait for Martinez to formulate a plan. She turned on her heel and began running toward the emergency stairwell, her heart pounding with a terror greater than anything she had faced that night.
The battle for Julian’s life wasn't over. It had only just begun."
