Chapter 9 - Into the Deep

Sarah froze. The wind whipped her wet hair across her face as she looked from Marcus’s gun to Julian, whose small face was contorted with absolute terror.
""Marcus, don't do this,"" Sarah pleaded. ""You were Clara’s friend. How could you help destroy her child?""
""Clara was naive,"" Marcus spat, his eyes cold and hollow. ""She built a fortune and intended to leave it locked away in trust funds while Arthur squandered it on philanthropy. Eleanor and I have a much better use for eighty million dollars.""
""Throw the drive into the lake, Marcus!"" Eleanor screamed from the end of the pier, her voice fraying into madness. ""Shoot her and throw it in the water!""
Julian suddenly bit down hard on Eleanor’s hand.
Eleanor shrieked in pain, instinctively letting go of his collar.
""Run, Julian!"" Sarah shouted.
Julian darted forward, ducking under Marcus’s outstretched arm. Marcus cursed, pivoting to grab the boy, and in that split second of distraction, Sarah lunged at Marcus with all her weight.
She collided with his chest, driving him back against the wooden railing. Marcus swung the pistol, the heavy barrel grazing Sarah’s temple, sending a blinding flash of white pain through her skull. But Sarah didn't let go; she clamped both hands around his wrist, twisting with desperate strength.
A gunshot cracked into the night sky. The bullet tore through the boathouse roof.
Marcus slammed Sarah hard against the planks, his superior strength overpowering her bruised body. He raised the weapon to fire point-blank into her chest.
""No!"" Julian’s voice cried out. The boy had turned back, grabbing a heavy iron mooring cleat left loose on the dock and hurling it with all his might at Marcus’s knees.
The heavy iron struck Marcus’s shin with a sickening thud. Marcus roared in agony, his balance slipping on the rain-slick wood. Sarah pushed upward with her legs, throwing Marcus off balance.
With a frantic cry, Marcus tumbled over the low railing, plunging headfirst into the churning, pitch-black water of the lake.
Before Sarah could breathe, Eleanor charged from behind like a wild animal, tackling Sarah to the dock. The silver flash drive flew from Sarah’s hand, skittering across the wet planks toward the edge.
Eleanor ignored Sarah, lunging wildly toward the drive as it hovered precariously over the dark abyss. Her manicured hand snatched it out of mid-air just as her knees slid off the slick edge of the pier.

Eleanor dangled over the freezing water, one hand clutching a support beam, the other clutching the drive.
""Help me!"" Eleanor screamed, looking up at Sarah in sheer horror. ""The current... it's pulling me under! Help me, Sarah!""
