Chapter 13 - A Father's Awakening

""Julian... my boy..."" Arthur’s voice was a ragged whisper, the oxygen mask fogging with each labored breath.

Julian scrambled off the gurney, ignoring the tug of his IV line, and climbed onto the edge of his father’s hospital bed. He wrapped his small arms around Arthur’s neck. ""Daddy, don't cry. Sarah saved me. She fought the bad man.""

Arthur buried his face in his son’s hair, his shoulders heaving with muffled sobs. For months, blinded by grief and manipulated by Eleanor’s practiced charm, he had neglected the one thing Clara had asked him to protect with his life.

""I am so sorry, Julian,"" Arthur choked out, his hand clutching his son’s back. ""I was so blind. I should have listened to you. I should have protected you.""

Arthur looked up from Julian, his red-rimmed eyes meeting Sarah’s. The billionaire looked utterly broken, stripped of all his corporate arrogance and wealth.

""Sarah,"" Arthur rasped, his voice thick with shame. ""I accused you. I almost let her throw you into the street. I nearly let them destroy my son because I was too cowardly to face the truth.""

""You were being poisoned, Mr. Vance,"" Sarah said softly, standing at the foot of the bed. ""Marcus Thorne was systematically dismantling your life from the inside. He used your grief as a weapon.""

""Detective Martinez was just here before you came in,"" Arthur whispered, closing his eyes as a tear ran down his temple. ""They ran a preliminary check on the micro-SD card. The audio is clear. Eleanor and Marcus... they didn't just try to kill Julian tonight.""

Arthur’s voice broke, a raw tremor of agony shaking his frame.

""What do you mean, sir?"" Sarah asked, a cold dread prickling her skin.

Arthur looked back at her, his eyes hollow with horror. ""The file on that card... it had an older audio log cached from the day Clara died. Eleanor was on the boat with Clara that afternoon. She disabled the emergency throttle. Clara didn't drown in an accident, Sarah. Eleanor murdered my wife.""

The room fell into a heavy, suffocating silence, broken only by the steady beep of the heart monitor.

Julian looked up at his father, his big hazel eyes wide with sudden understanding. ""Mommy didn't leave me because she was tired?""

""No, Julian,"" Arthur cried, pulling the boy closer. ""Mommy fought for you until her very last breath. And so did Sarah.""

Arthur reached out a trembling hand toward Sarah. Sarah stepped forward, taking his hand gently.

""I can never repay you for what you did tonight, Sarah,"" Arthur said, his grip surprisingly firm. ""You risked your life for my child when his own father failed him. Starting today, you are family. You will never want for anything as long as I live.""

Before Sarah could respond, the door to the ICU swung open. Detective Martinez stood in the doorway, his face pale and grim.

""Mr. Vance, Miss Cole,"" Martinez said in a tense whisper. ""We have a critical situation downstairs.""
