Chapter 1 - The Breach

The static vibrating through the baby monitor was not white noise. It possessed a rhythmic, synthesized pulse—a deliberate waveform that tore through the attic’s oppressive silence. Julian lowered his smartphone, the smooth gloss of the glass reflecting the abrupt draining of color from his face. On screen, the encrypted broadcast interface had collapsed into an angry cascade of corrupted crimson pixels.
His mother, Victoria, remained frozen. Her hand, perfectly manicured and dripping in refined elegance, stayed poised mid-air just inches from Lena’s trembling chin. The single strand of heirloom pearls resting against her navy silk dress caught the amber shaft of sunlight piercing the dormer window. For a woman whose power resided in immaculate control, the widening of her pale blue pupils was an admission of catastrophic failure.
""What did you press, Julian?"" Victoria’s voice did not rise in volume; it sharpened, cutting through the dusty warmth like a scalpel.
""I didn't touch anything,"" Julian stammered, his thumb aggressively sweeping across the darkened glass. ""The gateway dropped. It wasn't an internal server crash. Someone overrode our proxy from the outside.""
Lena slumped slightly against the cold metal back of the folding chair. Her breathing was still shallow, her hands tied behind her back pressing against the rough knotting of the nylon cord. The heavy fullness in her belly shifted as the unborn child stirred violently, reacting to her racing pulse. Beneath her matted dark bangs, Lena’s eyes shifted from Julian’s panicking silhouette toward the floorboards.
""Who else knows about the uplink?"" Victoria demanded, spinning toward her son, her diamond rings catching the dust motes floating between the exposed rafters.
""No one! Only the private tier bidders had the encrypted key."" Julian turned the device toward her. The screen was no longer dead; a blinking cursor appeared in pure white text: WE SEE YOU.
Lena exhaled a ragged breath, the corners of her cracked lips twitching upward into something faintly resembling a smile.
""You think this is funny, girl?"" Victoria stepped in close, her designer perfume suffocating in the attic's stale air. She raised the medical ziplock pouch, shaking the sterile plastic against Lena’s cheek. ""Your delivery was scheduled for midnight. Do not mistake a transmission delay for mercy.""

Julian looked up from the screen, his voice cracking with pure dread. ""Mom... look at the audio feed.""
The baby monitor ceased buzzing. From its tiny speaker came the distinct sound of heavy boots stepping across the gravel driveway far below.
