Chapter 13 - Ashes and Evidence

By dawn, the mansion was nothing more than a smoldering, blackened skeleton of stone and iron. Firefighters were still hosing down the steaming rubble of the basement, where industrial pumps had kept the lower vaults sealed until the ceiling finally gave way.

Mara stood by the command trailer parked on the perimeter lane, drinking bitter black coffee from a paper cup. David stepped out of the mobile command center, holding an encrypted digital storage drive enclosed in an evidence bag.

""The server racks in the sub-cellar were water-cooled and fireproofed,"" David said, handing the bag to Mara. ""Victoria kept comprehensive records. Every client transaction, every live-stream auction, every wire transfer. It’s all here.""

""How many?"" Mara asked, her voice tight.

""Over seventy high-profile subscribers across four continents,"" David replied grimly. ""Politicians, venture capitalists, brokers. The fallout from this is going to dismantle half a dozen corporate boards by noon.""

Mara looked over toward the transport helicopter waiting in the clearing. Lena and her baby had already been stabilized and boarded, ready for transport to a secure military hospital two hundred miles away, outside the jurisdiction of the corrupted local authorities.

Mara walked over to the chopper’s open sliding door. Lena was sitting upright, pale but visibly transformed. Her dark hair was combed back, a clean grey sweatshirt replacing the torn rags she had worn for months. The baby was sleeping soundly, completely unaware of the inferno he had survived.

Lena saw Mara approaching and extended her hand. Mara took it, feeling the quiet strength returning to the young mother’s grip.

""What do I do now?"" Lena asked, her voice barely carrying over the slow thrum of the helicopter’s idling rotors. ""They took my life. My family thinks I’ve been dead for six months.""

""Now, you give your son a name,"" Mara said with quiet certainty. ""And then you tell the world what happened in that attic. We’ll protect you while you do it.""

Lena looked down at the sleeping child. ""His name is Gabriel. Because an angel pulled him out of the fire.""

Mara offered a faint, sad smile. ""Not an angel, Lena. Just someone who refused to look away.""
