Chapter 15 - The Unbroken Frequency

One year later.
The small coastal cabin in Maine was surrounded by towering spruces, their needles whispering in the steady breeze coming off the Atlantic. Sunlight streamed through a clean bay window, illuminating a living room filled with children's wooden toys, warm woven rugs, and the comforting scent of baking bread.
Gabriel, now taking his first unsteady steps on chubby, resilient legs, giggled as he chased a rolling wooden ball across the polished pine floor. Lena watched him from the kitchen counter, smiling warmly, her skin healthy and sun-kissed, her hair long and shining.
On the counter sat a small, custom-built radio receiver—a gift Mara had delivered months ago. It was a secure, encrypted monitoring console, tuned to the private emergency frequency Mara’s underground network used to track illegal black-market transmissions.
It had remained silent for nearly twelve months.
Lena picked up Gabriel as he stumbled into her knees, lifting him into the air and eliciting a joyful belly laugh that filled the small kitchen with light. She set him down by his playmat, kissing his temple. ""Lunchtime, little man.""
Suddenly, a sharp, metallic chirp cut through the quiet kitchen.
Lena’s body instantly froze. Every muscle in her back locked into absolute stillness.
The console on the counter was blinking. A harsh, emerald light pulsed rhythmically against the brushed aluminum casing, accompanied by the slow, raspy hiss of an incoming high-frequency carrier signal.
Lena approached the counter slowly, her heart pounding with a sudden, suffocating surge of adrenaline that brought the phantom smell of smoke back into her throat.
She leaned down toward the speaker.
The static parted. From the tiny speaker came the distinct sound of a woman crying softly—followed by the chilling, unmistakable tap of manicured fingernails against a microphone.
Then, a familiar, aristocratic voice whispered through the speaker:

""Did you really believe the ledger had only one book, Lena?""
The screen flared crimson. A new video feed flickered to life."
