Chapter 4 - The Uninvited Guest

The figure that dropped quietly from the rafter onto the dusty floorboards was not an officer in tactical gear. It was a woman, slight of build, dressed in dark work clothes, her face smeared with soot and industrial grease. In her right hand, she held a short iron crowbar; slung across her chest was a rugged field radio that blinked in sync with the baby monitor on the dresser.
Lena pulled against her bonds, a muffled cry catching behind the thick adhesive tape.
""Easy,"" the woman whispered, raising a gloved hand. Her voice was the same low, steady timbre that had come through the receiver moments before. ""Keep quiet if you want to leave this house breathing.""
The woman stepped across the debris, kneeling swiftly behind Lena’s chair. Lena felt the cold steel of a serrated blade slip between her bound wrists. With a sharp, controlled upward jerk, the tension snapped. The nylon gave way, and Lena’s hands fell limp, throbbing with sudden, painful circulation.
Lena immediately tore the adhesive strip from her mouth, gasping for air. ""Who... who are you?""
""Someone who monitors the feeds Victoria sells to,"" the woman said, slicing through the ropes binding Lena’s ankles to the steel chair legs. ""My name is Mara. We don't have time for your questions. Her son is unconscious downstairs, but Victoria slipped into the cellar before we could corner her.""
""The baby..."" Lena choked out, clutching her swollen stomach as another contraction seized her core. ""She has medical supplies. She was going to—""
""I know what she was going to do,"" Mara interrupted grimly. ""She’s done it twice before in this county. You're the first one we found while the signal was still live.""
Mara reached into her utility vest, pulling out a heavy woolen jacket and draping it over Lena’s shivering shoulders. ""Can you walk?""
Lena tried to stand, but her knees buckled under her weight. Her joints felt hollow, starved of nutrition and water for days. Mara caught her under the arm, hauling her upright with surprising strength.

Before they could take a single step toward the hidden doorway, the loud hum of an industrial generator roared to life beneath their feet. The bare bulb in the center of the attic flashed blindingly bright.
Down in the walls, the heavy thud of electronic magnetic locks engaged, sealing the attic access shut.
