Chapter 1 - The Glass Door

Julian stepped across the cold threshold into the kitchen, the laughter of twenty close friends instantly turning into muffled background static. Emilia did not look up from the sink. Her hands, red from scalding water, gripped the damp cloth around a porcelain dinner plate, turning it over and over in mechanical rhythm. A single tear broke free, tracing a gleaming path down her jaw before dropping silently onto the ceramic surface.

"Emilia," Julian whispered, his voice catching in his throat. He reached toward her trembling shoulder, his chest tightening with a suffocating weight. "Why are you here alone? What happened?"

Her breath hitched, a faint gasp cutting through the sound of running water. Her rounded stomach rested against the edge of the granite counter, carrying the child they had prayed for across four agonizing years of failed fertility treatments. Yet her eyes were completely sunken, hollowed out by a sorrow so absolute it terrified him.

"Everyone is drinking the vintage champagne your father sent," she said, her voice paper-thin, devoid of warmth. "Sofia wanted more ice. She said hosts shouldn't leave their guests waiting."

Julian felt a hot spike of shame pierce his pride. Sofia was his glamorous business partner, the charismatic force behind the venture firm that had just secured a ten-million-dollar funding round—the very triumph they were celebrating tonight. Sofia had treated Emilia like domestic staff all evening, and Julian, swept up in toasts and handshakes, had let it happen.

"Forget Sofia, leave the dishes," Julian pleaded, reaching down to turn off the chrome faucet. "Look at me, please. Why are you weeping?"

Emilia slowly turned her face toward him. Her gaze drifted past his eyes, settling down on the kitchen island. There, tucked half-hidden beneath an open recipe stand, lay an unsealed manila envelope bearing the official crest of St. Jude's Diagnostic Laboratory.

"I went to your study to find extra cocktail napkins," Emilia murmured, her knuckles whitening around the dish towel. "The courier delivered this twenty minutes before the party started."

Julian froze, his pulse roaring in his ears like incoming surf. That envelope contained confidential genetic profiling results he had commissioned two weeks ago under complete secrecy.

"You opened it," Julian stated, terror draining every ounce of color from his face.

Emilia looked directly into his eyes, her lips parting in a bitter, shattered curve. "Why does the lab say the child I am carrying has zero biological link to you?"
