Chapter 13 - The Broken Vow

"Julian..." Emilia whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs. "What is that in your hand?"

Julian closed the door quietly behind him, signaling the nurse to leave them alone. He walked to the edge of the hospital bed, dropping onto the small plastic visitor’s chair. He looked down at the floor, unable to meet her searching eyes.

"Julian, look at me!" she demanded, her voice rising with frantic desperation. "What did you do while I was unconscious?"

"I saved our family," Julian whispered, his voice cracking into a ragged sob. He lifted his head, tears carving tracks through the grime on his face. "Sofia came to the NICU. She had an emergency custody order signed by a supreme court judge. Her lawyers were going to take the baby to a private facility upstate within the hour. I had no legal standing, Emilia. None. Under the law, I was a stranger to our child."

Emilia felt the room spin wildly. "And what did she want? Sofia didn't just walk away out of pity!"

Julian opened the leather portfolio, revealing a stack of documents with his signature freshly inked in dark blue at the bottom of every page.

"She wanted David's corporate shares," Julian choked out. "She offered a trade. She dropped all claims to parental custody. She signed full, uncontested adoption rights over to me. In exchange, I signed an irrevocable waiver assigning all voting rights, dividends, and executive authority of our daughter's trust fund to Sofia Vance until the child turns twenty-five."

Emilia stared at him in disbelief. "You negotiated our daughter's life like a real estate contract?"

"I bought her freedom!" Julian cried, grasping Emilia's cold hand, but she ripped it away with disgust. "Would you rather she grow up in Sofia's cold, sociopathic mansion, raised by nannies, just so she could have a bank account? I gave away the money so we could take our daughter home!"

"You didn't just give away money, Julian," Emilia said, her voice dropping into a terrifyingly cold whisper. "Look at page three."

Julian froze, staring at the document.

"She added a clause while you were sobbing," Emilia whispered, pointing a shaking finger at the fine print. "Didn't you read it?"
