Chapter 3 - The Gathering Shadows

Sofia’s smile vanished, replaced by an expression of cold, clinical appraisal. She set her crystal glass down on the counter with deliberate care. Outside the doorway, half a dozen guests hovered in awkward curiosity, murmuring among themselves.
"Julian," Sofia said, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp register. "Clear the room. Tell everyone the party is over."
"No," Emilia interjected, stepping past Julian toward the doorway, her voice ringing out with terrifying clarity. "Stay right where you are, everyone. Have some more wine. Watch the grand reveal of the Mercer family legacy."
Julian lunged forward, catching Emilia gently by the wrists, trying desperately to shelter her trembling frame from the prying eyes of his corporate associates. "Emilia, stop this, please. We need privacy. We can talk through this rationally."
"Rationally?" Emilia laughed, a wild, jagged sound that sent a shiver down Julian's spine. She wrenched her hands free from his grip. "You took away my autonomy, my truth, my dignity! You played god with my womb!"
She reached back toward the island, grabbed the lab report, and thrust it into the open air. The crowd drew back slightly, stunned by the raw devastation on her face. Julian felt exposed to the bone, every facade of wealth, success, and marital perfection crumbling in front of the people who controlled his company’s capital.
"Look at it!" Emilia cried, tears streaming down her pale cheeks again. "The paternal DNA doesn't belong to Julian. And it doesn't belong to any anonymous medical bank either."
Julian felt the air leave his lungs. He stared at Emilia, suddenly paralyzed by a horrifying realization. He had kept his secret buried deep within encrypted files and sealed envelopes, but there was another truth buried beneath it—one he hadn't known Dr. Ramos included in the diagnostic printout.
Sofia took a measured step forward, blocking the corridor view with her poised, commanding frame. Her face was completely drained of color, her aristocratic features pulled tight as wire.
"Emilia, give me that paper," Sofia whispered, her polished demeanor cracking into frantic urgency. "You have no idea what you are exposing right now."

Emilia looked from Sofia to Julian, her eyes widening as she read the hidden panic painted across Sofia's features. She looked down at the tiny print beneath the genetic markers, reading a handwritten doctor's note she hadn't noticed before.
Her eyes snapped open in sheer terror. "My God... Julian, whose child is this?"
