Chapter 14 - The Hidden Venom

Julian snatched the papers, his blood turning to liquid ice as his eyes frantically scanned the small, dense typography on the third page of the Vance Family Trust Assignment.
Clause 12-C: In the event that the designated custodians (Julian and Emilia Mercer) terminate their legal marriage, initiate divorce proceedings, or physically separate for a period exceeding thirty (30) consecutive days, parental custody shall immediately revert in full to the primary trustee: Sofia Vance.
"No..." Julian gasped, the papers slipping from his trembling fingers, scattering across the hospital bed. "No, this wasn't part of the verbal deal! She slipped this into the final rider!"
"She knows our marriage is over," Emilia said, her voice completely stripped of tears, replaced by an eerie, hollow calm. "She saw the look on my face in the kitchen. She knew that the moment I woke up, I would never sleep in the same bed with you again. She knew I would file for divorce."
"Emilia, please," Julian wept, falling to his knees beside the bed, burying his face in the sheets near her hips. "Don't say that. We can survive this. We can pretend. We can stay together for the baby. We don't have to love each other, we just have to live in the same house! Please don't let her take our girl!"
Emilia looked down at the man she had loved for ten years. She saw his guilt, his pathetic desperation, his cowardice, and the twisted love that had led him to commit unforgivable sins.
"You built our marriage on a mountain of secrets, Julian," she whispered, looking past him toward the window where the morning sun was beginning to pierce through the gray city smog. "You wanted a child to fix your broken pride. And now, to keep her, I have to live as a prisoner in your house, pretending to be your loving wife for the next eighteen years."
"Emilia..."

"Get out," she said coldly, turning her head away toward the wall. "Go to the nursery. I want to see my daughter. Bring her to me, or I swear to God, I will sign the divorce papers right now and let the world burn down around all of us."
Julian stood slowly, paralyzed by the absolute finality in her voice. He stepped backward out of the room, feeling like a ghost wandering through a nightmare of his own creation.
