Chapter 11 - The Cipher

Jax took the folded triangle of paper with trembling fingers. It was the note he had carried from California, but as he unfolded it in the lantern light, Clara leaned over his shoulder and gasped.

It wasn't a handwritten letter. It was a high-resolution printout of a bank wire transfer, stamped with an offshore clearance code. Beneath the numbers was a single sentence typed in cold, sans-serif font: Target verified. Elimination scheduled for morning feed. Asset: David Miller.

""David had this?"" Clara asked, her breath turning shallow. ""You took this off him?""

""I intercepted it from his handler two days ago,"" Jax whispered. ""That's how I knew to come. Clara, David wasn't just watching you. He was the one who personally selected the poison. He’s been dosing Leo’s food with trace amounts of synthetic digitalis for weeks to make it look like sudden cardiac failure.""

Clara’s hand flew to her mouth, tears of horror finally spilling over her eyelashes. She dropped to her knees beside Leo, pulling him into her arms, burying her face in his hair. The small, seemingly harmless moments—Leo refusing his evening bottle last week, Leo pushing away the baby food with that same stubborn, furrowed brow—suddenly flashed through her mind like lightning strikes.

""He knew,"" Clara whispered, looking down at her son in disbelief. ""He wouldn't eat it. He kept pushing the spoons away. I thought he was just being fussy...""

""He has my mother’s eyes,"" Jax said quietly, his voice cracking with emotion he rarely permitted himself to feel. ""And Marcus’s instincts. The Reyes family has survived five generations of betrayals because they can smell death before it enters the room.""

Suddenly, the oil lantern flickered and died, plunging the cabin into absolute blackness.

Outside, the faint snap of a dry twig broke the forest silence.
