Chapter 4 - The Fracture of Trust

The hallway seemed to lose all air. Clara’s breath caught in her throat, the bitter scent she had smelled at the sink rushing back into her mind with terrifying clarity. She looked at David, expecting outrage, denial, the righteous fury of an accused father.

Instead, David remained perfectly still. His expression did not change; the mild-mannered mask he had worn for the past year simply slid away, leaving behind a chilling, bureaucratic neutrality.

""You shouldn't have brought him here, Jax,"" David said smoothly, his voice devoid of the suburban gentility he had performed over morning coffee. ""It complicates the settlement.""

Clara felt the floor tilting beneath her feet. ""David? What... what is he talking about?""

Leo shifted in her arms, his small hand reaching out and grasping Clara’s collar, tugging it firmly as if trying to wake her from a nightmare. The child's touch anchored her. She stepped further away from David, retreating toward the kitchen where the empty glass still sat drying on the granite counter.

""David isn't an accountant from Portland, Clara,"" Jax said, taking a slow step through the threshold. The floor groaned beneath his heavy motorcycle boots. ""He’s cleaner crew for the Reyes syndicate. When you ran from California with my boy in your belly, they didn't chase you to kill you. They waited. They planted someone close to verify the lineage.""

""Lineage?"" Clara’s voice cracked. ""He's a baby!""

""He's the only heir to Marcus Reyes's estate outside the syndicate's direct control,"" David interrupted calmly, taking a step toward Clara. ""And Marcus died forty-eight hours ago in a federal penitentiary. The board doesn't like loose ends. A sudden crib death or tainted formula simplifies the corporate succession tremendously.""

David reached behind his back, slipping his fingers beneath his navy long-sleeved shirt.

Leo let out another sharp, authoritative shriek. Before David’s hand could clear his waistband, Jax lunged forward with the explosive speed of a cornered predator.
