Chapter 12 - The Perimeter Breached

The darkness inside the cabin was instant and suffocating. Clara froze on the floor, holding Leo tightly against her chest, her hand instinctively hovering over his mouth to muffle any sound. But the baby remained motionless, his small body pressed against her, perfectly quiet.
Jax rose from the wooden chair without making a sound. In the faint sliver of moonlight filtering through the dusty windowpanes, Clara saw him draw a combat blade from his boot and ready the semi-automatic pistol he had stripped from David. His silhouette was massive, lethal, and completely still.
A soft scraping sound resonated from the rear of the cabin—the window latch on the storage annex.
Jax moved like smoke, stepping into the hallway shadows.
Clara crawled backward toward the stone fireplace, her fingers searching the hearth until they closed around a heavy iron fire poker. She would not die cowering. If this was the end of her fragile peace, she would fight for every second of Leo’s life.
A shadow detached itself from the pantry doorway. It was tall, clad in tactical gear, night-vision goggles mounted to a matte-black helmet. The operative moved with professional efficiency, his silenced carbine raised, sweeping the room.
Before the operative’s barrel could align with Clara and the baby, Jax materialized behind him. A heavy forearm locked around the man's throat, dragging him into the darkness. There was no gunfire—only the muffled, violent struggle of boots scuffing wood, the wet crunch of cartilage, and then a heavy, lifeless collapse.
Jax stepped back into the moonlight, retrieving the operative's suppressed rifle and tactical radio.
From the radio earpiece pinned to the fallen vest, a voice crackled through the static—calm, cultured, and chillingly familiar.
