Chapter 2 - The Stranger on the Threshold

The chime vibrated through the floorboards, cutting through the sudden stillness of the house. Clara froze, her hand hovering inches from the glass. David folded his paper with slow, methodical precision, setting it on the glass table. ""Expecting anyone?"" he asked, his tone flat, unbothered, yet somehow detached from the warmth a husband ought to show.
""No,"" Clara murmured, her eyes lingering on Leo. The boy hadn't dropped his arm. His finger remained outstretched toward the kitchen entryway, his small face stone-cold, his eyes fixed on the hallway leading to the front door. He wasn't pointing at the milk anymore; his gaze had tracked a presence before the doorbell had even ceased ringing.
David rose, smoothing his khaki trousers. ""I’ll get it.""
Clara watched him walk away. The moment he turned the corner, she picked up the glass. The milk felt unusually heavy, and when she brought it toward the sink, a faint scent caught the back of her throat—bitter almond, nearly masked by lactose, but sharp enough to cause an instinctive recoil. Her heart began to hammer against her ribs. Leo watched her every movement, his expression relaxing slightly only when she tipped the glass into the drain. The thick liquid pooled and vanished into the disposal.
From the foyer, the murmur of voices began. It was not the polite greeting of a neighbor or a courier. One voice was David’s, defensive and hushed. The other was deep, gravelly, and carried the unmistakable cadence of someone accustomed to shouting over the roar of highway engines.
Clara scooped Leo into her arms. He pressed his forehead against her neck, his breathing steady, grounding her racing pulse. She walked softly toward the arched opening of the front hall.

Standing on their porch through the half-open door was a massive man clad in a weathered leather cut. Gray streaks shot through his long, tied-back hair, and ink coiled down the visible skin of his neck.
The stranger looked past David's shoulder and locked eyes with Clara—and then his gaze dropped directly to Leo.
