Chapter 1 - The Gavel Falls

The brass heavy doors swung shut behind Judge Clara Vance with a resonant thud that echoed through Courtroom 4B. The scent of polished mahogany and old parchment hung thick in the air, instantly suffocating the nervous whispers of spectators. Below the bench, Julian Sterling stood frozen in his bespoke three-piece suit, his jaw unhinged. The smirk that had defined his career—and the brutal assault he thought he had orchestrated outside in the corridor—dissolved into raw terror. Beside him, Eleanor Davenport clutched her pearls so tightly her knuckles turned chalk-white.

Clara adjusted the collar of her black robe, intentionally letting the cool silk brush against the stinging laceration near the corner of her lip. A faint smear of drying blood was still visible against her pale skin. She didn’t bother covering it with foundation. Let them see what their paid thugs had done ten minutes prior in the stairwell. Let them realize that broken skin was merely an inconvenience, not an impediment to justice.

She placed the thick gray case dossier onto the polished wood of the bench. The heavy thud made Julian flinch visibly. The bailiff stepped forward, his voice cutting through the electric stillness: ""All rise. Court is now in session, the Honorable Clara Vance presiding.""

Eleanor rose clumsily, her high heels wobbling. She leaned toward Julian, hissing under her breath, ""Julian, what is this? You swore she was just a state attorney! You said she was handled!"" Julian didn't answer. His throat worked silently as he swallowed down a wave of bile.

Clara raised her clear, piercing eyes and looked directly into Julian’s trembling gaze. There was no theatrical anger in her face, only the devastating chill of absolute supremacy.

""Counsel,"" Clara spoke, her voice smooth, deep, and measured through the bench microphone. ""Before we address the Davenport family trust and the millions embezzled from the public pension fund, there is a minor administrative formality to attend to.""

Julian leaned on the mahogany podium to steady his shaking legs. ""Y-Your Honor, if this is regarding the settlement conference—""

""Quiet,"" Clara stated evenly. The single word silenced him as cleanly as a guillotine blade. She tapped the red wax seal of the gray case file with her index finger. ""Ten minutes ago, a man wearing a silver signet ring ambushed me in the east stairwell, demanding I drop the state’s subpoena. He carried an envelope addressed in your distinct fountain-pen script, Mr. Sterling.""

A collective gasp swept through the gallery. Eleanor’s face drained of every ounce of color. Julian felt the blood rush to his ears, the fluorescent lighting turning the room blindingly white.

""Now,"" Judge Vance said, leaning forward slightly, her bruised lip curving into an icy half-smile. ""Shall we call our first witness, or would you prefer the federal marshals waiting outside to introduce themselves first?""

Cliffhanger: Before Julian could muster a reply, the heavy doors at the rear of the courtroom clicked open, and two armed marshals stepped inside, holding a set of chrome handcuffs.
