Chapter 10 - The Asset Burn

The relentless beeping of the satellite phone sliced through the chaotic room like a countdown timer. Vincent, pinned against the wall by Miller's forearm, let out a wet, mocking laugh through his bloody teeth.
""You think you won, Vance?"" Vincent wheezed, his eyes gleaming with malicious triumph. ""That's the dead-man protocol. If I don't authenticate with my biometrics every thirty minutes, the entire server cluster in Zurich initiates an unrecoverable thermal purge. Every transaction, every ledger, every penny of the pension fund... gone. Erased into digital dust.""
Julian dragged himself into the doorway, his face pale as chalk. ""He's telling the truth, Your Honor! The Davenport infrastructure uses a zero-knowledge deletion script! If that phone expires, there will be no evidence left to convict him of the offshore theft, and the city's pension fund will be completely unrecoverable!""
""How long on the timer, Miller?"" Clara demanded, stepping closer.
Miller reached into Vincent’s coat, pulling out the rugged, military-grade device. The screen glowed red: 02:14... 02:13... 02:12.
""Two minutes, Judge,"" Miller said. ""He needs to place his thumb on the scanner.""
""Never,"" Vincent snarled, clenching his uninjured left hand into a tight fist, tucking it behind his back. ""Let it burn! I'd rather see those dockworkers starve in the cold than let you parade me through a public trial!""
Eleanor crawled forward, her hands covered in cuts, her eyes filled with venomous despair. ""Vincent, please! Everything we built—""
""You built nothing, Mother! You were just a thief in a pearl necklace!""
Clara looked at the ticking timer: 01:45.
There was no time for warrants. No time for federal hackers. She looked at Vincent, then at Miller.
""Marshal,"" Clara said in a tone of terrifying coldness, ""bring his hand forward.""
""Judge, protocol prohibits forced biometric extraction under coercive detention without—""
""I am the presiding federal magistrate of this district,"" Clara interrupted, her eyes burning with an unholy fire. ""And this is an emergency preservation of evidence under catastrophic threat. Give me his hand.""
Miller hesitated for a fraction of a second, then twisted Vincent’s left arm forward, forcing his clenched fist onto the desk. Clara reached into her pocket and produced the heavy silver pen she used to sign execution warrants. She jammed the hardened tungsten tip directly into the pressure point between his thumb and forefinger.
Vincent screamed in absolute agony as the reflex forced his fingers to splay open. Clara grabbed his thumb and slammed it down onto the glowing red sensor of the satellite phone.
00:03... 00:02... 00:01...

The screen flashed green: OVERRIDE ACCEPTED. SERVERS SECURED.
Cliffhanger: Just as the green light stabilized, the phone buzzed violently with an incoming encrypted message from an unsaved number: The package has been delivered to your sister's house, Vance.
