Chapter 15 - The Bench of Truth

Forty-eight hours later.
The United States District Court for the Southern District was packed to its absolute capacity. Spectators, international journalists, senators, and federal prosecutors sat shoulder-to-shoulder in complete, breathless silence. The heavy oak doors that had been shattered during the assault were replaced by temporary steel reinforcements, guarded by a full platoon of federal marshals.
At the defense table sat Eleanor Davenport in an orange prison jumpsuit, her hair unwashed, her wrists shackled to a chain around her waist. Beside her sat Vincent, his broken arm immobilized in a heavy plaster cast, his face swollen and bruised, stripped of every ounce of aristocratic arrogance. Behind them, Julian Sterling sat in a wheelchair, having traded his testimony for twenty-five years in protective custody.
The side door opened.
""All rise,"" the bailiff intoned, his voice shaking with profound solemnity. ""The United States District Court is now in session. The Honorable Clara Vance presiding.""
Every single person in the massive chamber rose instantly to their feet.
Clara walked up the steps to the bench with absolute, unbroken poise. She wore a brand-new black robe, immaculate and pressed. The cut on her lip was closed with clean, sterile butterfly stitches—a permanent scar that would forever mark her face, worn not as a wound, but as a badge of indestructible authority.
She sat down. She did not look at the cameras flashing silently behind the soundproof glass of the press box. She did not look at the governor sitting in the front row, whose name appeared four times on the seized storage drive.
She placed the heavy hickory gavel on the sounding block.
""Be seated,"" Clara said. The room obeyed as one collective body.
Clara opened the newly drafted, five-hundred-page federal indictment. She looked down from the towering height of the bench directly into the hollow, defeated eyes of Eleanor and Vincent Davenport.
""In the matter of the United States versus Davenport,"" Clara’s voice resonated through the courtroom, carrying through every speaker, every television set across the country, and into the annals of legal history. ""The court has reviewed the complete financial records, the murder conspiracies, and the state treason charges.""
She paused, lifting the wooden gavel in her right hand.
""There will be no bail. There will be no settlements. There will be no mercy,"" Clara stated, her eyes flashing like steel in the morning sun. ""This court belongs to the people. And justice will be served down to the very last cent.""

She brought the gavel down with a thunderous, final crack that shook the wood of the bench and echoed into the permanent silence of their ruined dynasty.
Cliffhanger: As the sound of the gavel faded, Clara caught the eye of an unknown man in the back row who slowly closed a small black notebook and slipped out the rear door."
