Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Dark

The gallery erupted into chaos. Journalists scrambled from their seats, pushing past the wooden swinging gates toward the exit doors to file emergency bulletins. Spectators leaned over railings, murmuring frantically.

BANG!

Clara struck the sounding block once. The sharp, explosive crack of the gavel echoed like a gunshot, freezing the entire room in mid-step.

""Clear the gallery,"" Clara ordered, her voice cutting through the noise with razor precision. ""Bailiffs, clear the courtroom immediately. This is now a closed hearing under Title Eighteen security protocols.""

Within ninety seconds, the room was emptied of the press and public. Only the court reporter, the marshals, Julian, Eleanor, and Clara remained beneath the dim yellow chandeliers. The silence that followed was oppressive, heavy with the stench of impending ruin.

Clara rested her chin on her steepled fingers, her eyes locked on Julian. ""You claim the order was execution, Mr. Sterling. And who authorized it?""

Julian slumped forward, his forehead pressing against the cold oak table. ""It wasn't Eleanor. She's ruthless, but she doesn't have the stomach for wet work anymore. Not since her husband.""

Eleanor glared at him, her chest heaving, but she remained silent, trapped between two bailiffs.

""Then who?"" Clara asked.

""Her son,"" Julian whispered. ""Vincent Davenport. He flew in from Zurich last night. He told Marcus Gable that if you survived the stairwell, you were never supposed to make it past the bench today.""

Clara felt a slight chill ripple across the back of her neck, but her face remained carved of stone. Vincent Davenport—the shadowy heir who managed the family’s international shell companies, a man who had never set foot inside a domestic courtroom.

""Vincent is outside?"" Clara asked softly.

May you like

""No,"" Julian swallowed hard, his eyes darting toward the ornate stained-glass windows overlooking the plaza below. ""He said he would be watching from across the street. And if I broke... he had a contingency plan.""

Cliffhanger: The bright afternoon light streaming through the south-facing courtroom window was suddenly eclipsed by the red dot of a laser sight painting the center of Clara’s judicial robe.
