Chapter 14 - The Midnight Ward

The helicopter landed on the emergency rooftop pad of Providence St. Peter Hospital with a concussive blast of wind. Below, the sprawling medical complex was dark, running solely on the emergency hum of low-power backup generators.
Alexander leaped out first, dressed in full tactical black beneath a ballistic vest, his customized assault rifle slung across his chest. Clara followed immediately, moving with fast, determined strides. The pneumatic brace hummed softly with every step, keeping her leg locked in perfect alignment. Behind them bounded Titan, his dark eyes locked on the rooftop stairwell door, emitting a low, vibrating growl that cut through the whine of the cooling rotor blades.
Marcus and four heavily armed private security operatives fanned out in a diamond formation, their weapon-mounted flashlights cutting clean beams through the thick fog.
"Floor four," Clara said, her voice shaking with desperate urgency. "Intensive Care Unit, Room 412."
Alexander breached the heavy stairwell door with a sharp kick, his rifle raised. "Clear."
They descended the concrete stairs in absolute silence, moving like ghosts through the darkened hospital. The scent of ozone, rubbing alcohol, and cold air filled the corridors. On the fourth floor, the electronic card readers were dead, their emergency maglocks bypassed by brute force. Pry marks scarred the double fire doors.
"They're inside," Marcus whispered, clicking off the safety on his sidearm.
Alexander motioned for his team to hold. He turned to Clara, placing a hand on the back of her neck, pulling her close. "Stay behind me. No matter what happens, do not step into the line of fire."
"She's my mother, Alexander," Clara whispered, her hazel eyes blazing in the shadows. "I'm not hiding."
Alexander gave a single, tight nod of fierce respect. "Titan, point."
The dog moved silently down the darkened ICU hallway, his padded paws making zero sound against the linoleum. Outside Room 412, two men in dark tactical suits stood guard, their rifles at the low ready.
Before the guards could react to the shadow moving through the corridor, Alexander stepped out from an alcove, firing two suppressed rounds. Both men collapsed instantly, neutralized before they could raise an alarm.
Alexander kicked the door of Room 412 open.
Inside, the faint green glow of a portable dialysis monitor cast sickly light across the pale, frail face of Elena Diaz. Standing beside the bed was Julian Vance. His arm was in a medical sling from his rooftop fall, his face battered and bruised, but his eyes were wide with the deranged triumph of a madman.
In his good hand, Julian held a medical syringe filled with clear, lethal potassium chloride, its needle hovering inches from Elena’s primary IV line.
"One more step, brother," Julian snarled, his voice trembling with manic hysteria, "and I push this plunger. Her heart will stop in three seconds."
Alexander froze, raising his hand to signal his men to hold their fire. Clara gasped, tears instantly springing to her eyes as she looked at her mother’s unconscious, fragile form hooked to the whistling machines.
"Julian," Clara begged, taking a half-step forward. "Don't do this. It’s over. We signed the papers. I'm his wife. The trust is sealed."
"It's not over!" Julian screamed, his spittle flying in the dim light. "A marriage can be annulled if the principal heir dies before the filing is registered at the county clerk's office! Vanderbilt has teams waiting at the courthouse right now! You think you won, you little bastard? You gave everything to a gutter cleaner!"
May you like
"Let her go, Julian," Alexander said, his voice dangerously low, like the rumble of an approaching earthquake. "You kill that woman, and there is no prison on this earth that will keep me from tearing you apart with my bare hands."
"Drop your weapons!" Julian shrieked, pressing the needle directly against the rubber injection port of the IV line. "Drop them, or she dies right now!"
