Chapter 11 - The Siege of Orcas Island

"Get inside! Now!" Alexander shouted, grabbing Clara by the arm and pulling her back through the reinforced French doors of the terrace.
The heavy glass slammed shut, and Alexander engaged the multi-point steel locking bolts with a brutal twist of his wrist. Outside, the night exploded into chaos. The steady, terrifying rhythm of heavy-caliber machine-gun fire ripped through the pine forest below the estate, chewing through the manicured hedges and blowing chunks of stone off the outer perimeter walls.
Titan barked furiously, pacing back and forth in front of Clara, his teeth bared, saliva glistening on his massive black jowls.
"Marcus!" Alexander yelled into his wrist comm. "What's their strength?"
"At least twelve private military contractors, sir!" Marcus’s voice crackled through static and deafening explosions. "They're using night-vision optics and breaching charges! They've already bypassed the lower guardhouse! We're falling back to the main house!"
A heavy concussive blast rattled the entire foundation of the stone manor, sending fine dust drifting down from the high wooden rafters. The lights flickered violently before the backup battery banks engaged, bathing the sprawling living room in a dim, tactical crimson glow.
Alexander pulled Clara down behind a massive granite kitchen island. "Stay low. The glass on the terrace is rated for small arms, but if they bring out an anti-material rifle, that wall will fold."
"What about the seaplane?" Clara asked, clutching the front of his shirt, her knuckles white with fear. "The registrar?"
"They won't land in an active hot zone," Alexander said grimly. He reached into a hidden cabinet beneath the marble island, pulling out an automatic shotgun and several spare magazines for his handgun. "Vanderbilt isn't trying to negotiate anymore. He knows you refused the payout. If you die before your twenty-eighth birthday without an heir or a spouse, the trust reverts to the original corporate charter—which Sovereign Apex controls through proxy shares."
"So they're here to kill me tonight," Clara whispered, the terrifying reality setting in.
"They have to go through me first," Alexander replied, his voice deadly quiet. He checked the shotgun's chamber with a crisp, lethal motion. "And Clara, I don't lose."
Glass shattered violently in the west wing. Screams and the staccato bark of tactical submachine guns echoed through the hallways. Alexander’s private security team was fighting for every inch of ground, but Sovereign Apex’s mercenaries were moving with ruthless, professional speed.
"Titan," Alexander commanded, his voice dropping to a low, resonant frequency. "Guard Clara. Down."
The massive Cane Corso immediately dropped to his stomach beside Clara, his heavy body pressing tightly against her legs, shielding her like a living wall of muscle.
"Alexander, wait!" Clara cried out, grabbing his sleeve as he prepared to step out into the kill zone of the hallway. "You can't take on twelve armed men alone!"
Alexander paused, turning back to look down at her in the dim red light. He reached down, took her hand, and pressed a heavy, silver signet ring into her palm—the personal seal of the Vance family patriarch.
"If I don't come back," Alexander said softly, his dark eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that burned through the chaos, "there's an underground sea tunnel beneath the boathouse. The access code is the date of David Mercer's death: 0-9-1-4. Take Titan and run."
Before she could protest, Alexander stepped out from behind the counter, racking the shotgun with a thunderous roar as he engaged the first two mercenaries breaching the living room corridor.

The room erupted into deafening thunder. Muzzle flashes illuminated the grand room in violent, strobe-like bursts. Alexander fired with surgical, devastating accuracy, dropping the lead contractor instantly before taking cover behind an oak pillar.
Clara pressed her back against the cold stone, holding the silver ring against her chest. Through the smoke and gunfire, she suddenly saw a third mercenary slip silently through a shattered side window behind them—aiming a suppressed rifle directly at Alexander’s exposed back.
