Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Choice

The wind whipped across the stone terrace, carrying the salty tang of the dark Pacific and the cold hum of the hovering drone. Five hundred million dollars. The sheer magnitude of the number felt completely unreal to Clara. A fraction of that money would cure her mother, buy a quiet villa in the south of France, and erase every hardship, every cold night, and every humiliation she had ever suffered. She would never have to scrub another floor. She would never have to be dragged into billionaire blood feuds.

She looked at the holographic face of Vanderbilt, hovering in the night air like a ghost. His smile was polished, civilized, and utterly devoid of a soul.

Then she looked at Alexander Vance. He stood motionless beside her, his dark hair disheveled by the coastal gale, his broad shoulders squared against the world. He hadn't begged. He hadn't tried to match the astronomical bribe. He simply watched her, his deep eyes burning with a raw, terrifying honesty. Behind him, Titan leaned his massive body against Clara’s leg, offering the warm, unconditional loyalty of a beast who judged humans by their spirit, not their bank accounts.

Clara took a slow, deliberate breath, resting her hands on the cold stone balustrade.

"Mr. Vanderbilt," Clara spoke, her voice clear and carrying over the whir of the carbon-fiber rotors.

"Yes, my dear?" Vanderbilt purred, his digital projection leaning closer. "A sensible young woman always chooses freedom over someone else's war."

"You talked about my mother's patents," Clara said evenly. "You talked about market value and liquidation. But you didn't mention David Mercer."

The projection’s smooth smile faltered slightly, a microscopic hitch in the older man’s composure.

"My father died on the Aurora Bridge thirty years ago because he stood between men like you and what was right," Clara continued, her chin lifting with quiet, unshakeable dignity. "And three weeks ago, you sent a car to break my body in the dark. You thought I was weak because I wore a uniform and held a cleaning rag."

"Miss Diaz, let us be pragmatic—"

"I am being pragmatic," Clara cut him off, her voice ringing out like cold steel. "You took my father’s life. You stole my mother’s health. And you thought five hundred million dollars would make me your accomplice?"

She turned to Alexander, meeting his intense, unblinking gaze. "Where do I sign the marriage license?"

Alexander’s eyes flashed with a fierce, brilliant light. Without a word, he pulled his sidearm from beneath his shirt, aimed with casual, lethal precision into the night sky, and pulled the trigger.

The heavy bullet tore straight through the drone's primary sensor array. The machine sparked violently, its holographic projector exploding in a shower of blue sparks, before spinning out of control and crashing into the rocky surf below.

Silence descended over the terrace, broken only by the crash of the ocean waves against the cliffs.

Alexander holstered the weapon, his chest heaving slightly. He turned to face Clara, stepping close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from his body. "You just declared war on the most dangerous syndicate in Europe."

"No," Clara said softly, looking up into his rugged face. "We did."

Alexander reached out, his calloused thumb gently tracing the line of her jaw, a gesture so tender, so profoundly intimate, that Clara’s breath caught in her throat. "The county registrar is arriving by seaplane at dawn. By noon, Vance Holdings will be legally indivisible."

"And then?" she asked, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"And then," Alexander murmured, his voice dark with predatory anticipation, "we go back to Seattle and dismantle every single man who ever made you bleed."

May you like

Before Clara could answer, the compound’s perimeter searchlights suddenly surged to blinding intensity. The heavy automated defense sirens began to wail in unison.

Marcus's frantic voice burst over Alexander’s tactical earpiece: "Mr. Vance! They didn't just send a drone! A tactical landing craft just cut through the western reef! They're hitting the private dock right now!"
