Chapter 2 - The Redacted Ledger

The hallway seemed to drop ten degrees in an instant. Howard stood frozen under Alexander’s piercing glare, the knuckles holding his clipboard turning stark white. Titan remained at Clara’s side, a statue of dark muscle and coiled tension, his yellow eyes fixed unwaveringly on the trembling manager.

"What did you just say?" Alexander spoke with lethal calm. He did not raise his voice; he never needed to. Power, in Alexander Vance’s world, was measured by how quietly one could destroy a man.

Howard swallowed dryly, his collar suddenly too tight. "She... she shouldn't be working here, sir. The system flagged her badge three days ago. Her placement on this floor wasn't authorized by building maintenance. It came from upstairs. From the executive records."

Clara pushed herself up slightly, using the metal frame of her cleaning cart for balance. The brace creaked, and a sharp wince crossed her face. "I was told there was an open overtime shift on forty-five. The agency supervisor handed me the keycard this morning. I didn't ask for any special treatment."

"Quiet," Alexander murmured, though the command was surprisingly soft as his gaze shifted back to Clara. He reached down, offering an open palm. Clara hesitated, looking down at his manicured fingers, the dark tattoos wrapping around his wrist, and then at her own calloused, soapy hands. Slowly, she placed her fingers in his.

His grip was warm, solid, and impossibly gentle as he helped her up from the cold floor, ensuring she put no weight on her injured knee. Once she was steady against the cart, Alexander turned fully toward Howard, his coat billowing slightly with the movement.

"Who issued the override, Howard?"

"It... it was signed off under your brother’s executive clearance, sir. Julian’s office," Howard stammered, trembling as he extended the clipboard. "Two days before the board meeting. Julian specifically requested her company assigned to the executive suites."

Alexander didn't look at the clipboard. His expression remained utterly unreadable, but a muscle feathered in his tight jaw. Julian Vance had been plotting a board coup for six months, quietly acquiring minority shares and exploiting every operational crack in Vance Holdings. Why would a ruthless corporate shark care about an injured third-party cleaner?

"Howard," Alexander said evenly. "Clear out your locker. You're done."

"Mr. Vance, wait! I only followed protocol—"

"You forced a crippled worker to scrub three thousand square feet of stone at two in the morning so you could pocket the third-party contractor margin," Alexander cut him off, his voice flat and merciless. "You have ten minutes to leave the property before building security throws you into the street."

Howard’s jaw worked soundlessly. Terrified by the predatory glare of Titan, who took a menacing half-step forward, the manager turned on his heel and fled down the hallway toward the service elevators.

Silence returned to the penthouse corridor, broken only by the low hum of the ventilation system. Clara stood frozen, leaning against the cart, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"Mr. Vance," she began, her voice small. "I don't know your brother. I've never met anyone named Julian."

Alexander turned to face her, his dark eyes studying every line of her face with intense scrutiny. "Julian doesn't do anything by accident, Miss..."

"Clara. Clara Diaz."

Alexander reached into his inner pocket, not for a checkbook, but for his personal encrypted phone. As he illuminated the screen, an alert flashed across the top banner—a notification from his private security firm regarding Julian’s hidden assets. Attached was a scanned photograph from twenty-five years ago.

Alexander’s breath hitched almost imperceptibly as he glanced between the aged digital portrait and the fragile woman standing before him. "Diaz," Alexander repeated softly, the word heavy with a dark realization. "Clara, where did you get that brace?"
