Chapter 13 - The Docks of Retribution

The southern docks were shrouded in a thick, sulfurous fog that rolled off the black waters of the harbor. Massive, rusted shipping containers stood stacked five stories high like ancient monolithic tombs, creating a labyrinth of narrow, shadowy corridors.

Dwight stepped out of the black sedan into the cold harbor mist, accompanied by eight elite operators from his personal vanguard. Victor was not with them; Dwight had ordered him to remain by Julian’s side at the estate. Dwight held a suppressed carbine low against his thigh, his night-vision optics scanning the catwalks and the rusted cranes looming overhead.

The abandoned chemical processing plant at the end of Pier 42 was brightly illuminated by portable halogen floodlights. Through the heavy mist, Dwight could see dozens of men dressed in sterile grey tactical gear offloading heavy wooden crates from the hold of a black cargo freighter. These were not local street thugs or desperate mob enforcers; they were professional corporate mercenaries hired by the Ironwood Consortium.

"Thermal sweep," Dwight whispered into his throat microphone.

His lead scout tapped a small receiver. "Count twenty-four tangos on the ground, sir. Six on the gantry cranes. Heavy machine gun nest positioned on the roof of the main warehouse. If we walk into that killzone, they’ll chew us to pieces."

Dwight studied the layout with cold, mathematical calculation. He had fought on these very piers thirty years ago when he tore down Eleanor's father. He knew every drainage culvert, every subterranean pipe, and every blind spot in the harbor's century-old architecture.

"We don't walk into the killzone," Dwight murmured. "We sink the foundation."

Dwight signaled to his demolitions specialist, who was carrying a heavy tactical backpack filled with maritime breaching charges. "Take the lower seawater intake tunnel. Plant the charges along the wooden pylons beneath the main warehouse. When I give the order, blow the supports. The entire floor will collapse into the harbor."

"Yes, Boss." The specialist slipped silently into the black, freezing water beneath the pier without making a ripple.

Dwight and his remaining six men moved silently through the maze of shipping containers, eliminating two perimeter patrols with clinical, suppressed fire. They climbed an iron maintenance ladder to the elevated catwalk overlooking the main chemical facility.

Inside the warehouse, standing beside a temporary command desk covered in monitors and satellite uplinks, was Eleanor Vance.

She was a striking woman in her late thirties, with sharp, aristocratic cheekbones, piercing cold blue eyes, and raven hair pulled back into a severe bun. She wore an expensive charcoal wool trench coat over a tactical vest, exuding an aura of calculated, corporate malice. Beside her stood a hulking mercenary commander clad in full body armor, studying a satellite map of Blackwood Hall.

"The extraction teams are ready, Ms. Vance," the commander reported in a clipped European accent. "We hit the estate at three in the morning. We use thermite on the front gates and deploy paralyzing gas through the ventilation shafts. We secure the child alive within four minutes."

Eleanor looked up at the monitors, her eyes filled with a terrifying, obsessive fire. "I don't care about the collateral damage. Kill every guard, kill Victor, and if Dwight is there, bring him to me in chains. I want him to watch as I sign the adoption papers for his grandson. I want him to know that a Van Der Bilt will raise the last heir of his empire as a servant in our house."

High above on the catwalk, Dwight’s eyes narrowed into slits of lethal fury. Hearing her plan to repeat the very cruelty Julian had already suffered triggered a primitive, volcanic rage that shattered his cold tactical detachment.

Dwight raised his carbine, aligning his sights through the glass office window directly between the eyes of the mercenary commander.

"Now," Dwight whispered into his radio.

A split second later, a series of muffled, underwater thuds shook the harbor bedrock.

A deafening roar erupted as the structural pylons supporting the warehouse gave way. The concrete floor cracked into massive, jagged slabs, collapsing violently into the freezing ocean below. Crates of weapons, tactical vehicles, and screaming mercenaries were swallowed instantly into the churning black water.

The halogen lights exploded into sparks as power lines snapped. Alarms shrieked through the night air.

Dwight kicked open the catwalk door and opened fire, unleashing absolute hell upon the surviving mercenaries below.
