Chapter 6 - Echoes of the Firstborn

The damp silence of the Swiss vault grew heavy as Dwight stared at the paper in his hands. The ink seemed to sear itself into his retinas: Dorian Dwight. His firstborn. The golden child who was meant to inherit the family throne before a car bomb in Milan tore him away at twenty-six.

Dwight remembered the unbearable grief that had turned him into a heartless shadow for four agonizing years, until Elena had entered his life like a sudden light. She had never spoken of Dorian. She had approached Dwight as an innocent stranger fleeing a broken engagement, her eyes filled with a grief that mirrored his own.

Now, the horrific, beautiful truth unveiled itself in the quiet subterranean room. Elena had not been an opportunist seeking an empire. She had been carrying the final, secret legacy of Dwight’s dead son. She had hidden the truth to protect the child from the ruthless wolves circling the family, knowing that if Dwight’s enemies—or worse, his ambitious brother Malcolm—knew Dorian had an heir, the boy would have been murdered in his cradle.

"Daddy?" Julian’s voice pulled Dwight out of the paralyzing haze. The boy was looking at him, tilting his head with innocent curiosity. "Is that a picture of Mommy?"

Dwight quickly slipped the dossier back into the drawer, but his hands trembled slightly as he picked up the leather-bound journal. Tucked inside the cover was a photograph: Elena, radiant and laughing in a sunlit garden, holding hands with Dorian. On the back, written in Elena’s delicate cursive script, were the words: If you are reading this, Dwight, forgive me. I gave you back a piece of the soul you lost. Protect him not as your son, but as our blood.

Julian was not his son. Julian was his grandson.

A deep, tectonic shift occurred within Dwight's chest. The faint sting of betrayal evaporated into an overwhelming tide of reverence and fury. The blood running through the boy’s veins was not an insult to Dwight’s honor; it was the direct lineage of his beloved Dorian. Julian was the true, rightful heir to every street, every dock, and every dollar the syndicate controlled.

"Yes, Julian," Dwight said, his voice thick with uncharacteristic warmth as he crouched down before the child. He showed him the photograph, pointing a thick, scarred finger at Dorian’s smiling face. "This was your... this was a very brave man. He was family."

Julian touched the glossy paper with his small thumb. "He looks like me."

"He does," Dwight whispered, feeling a tightness in his throat. "More than you know."

Dwight gathered the journal, the letters, and the clinic records, sealing them inside his heavy leather briefcase. He turned to Victor, who stood near the vault door, watching his boss with quiet vigilance.

"Victor," Dwight commanded, his aura of terrifying authority returning in full force. "We leave for the airport immediately. Have our tactical teams in New York mobilize."

Victor frowned slightly. "Sir? What about Malcolm?"

"Malcolm knew," Dwight snarled, his eyes narrowing into cold slits of slate. "He didn't just want the empire. He knew Julian was Dorian’s child. Malcolm orchestrated the car bomb in Milan seven years ago to clear his own path to the succession. When he realized Elena had escaped with Dorian’s child, he tried to break the boy from the inside out using Agnes."

Victor’s face hardened. He had served Dorian as a young soldier; the boy’s murder had remained an unsolved ghost that haunted the entire syndicate. To know the killer was Malcolm—the victim's own uncle—was a betrayal that demanded nothing less than absolute annihilation.

"Understood, sir," Victor said, his hand dropping to his sidearm. "I will call the captains."

They exited the bank and moved swiftly into the armored Mercedes. As the vehicle pulled into the Zurich afternoon traffic, heading toward the runway, Dwight pulled out his satellite phone and dialed the head of security guarding Malcolm's hospital room in New York.

The phone rang three times before connecting.

"Sir," the guard answered, his voice shaky and hurried.

"Give the phone to Malcolm," Dwight ordered.

"Sir... there’s a problem," the guard stammered, panic lacing his tone. "Twenty minutes ago, a private medical transport unit arrived with forged clearance from the district attorney’s office. They hit the floor with tear gas and stun grenades. Sir... Malcolm is gone."

Dwight gripped the phone so tightly the casing cracked beneath his fingers.

"Who took him?" Dwight roared, ignoring the terrified gasp from Julian beside him.

"We pulled the traffic feeds, sir," the guard answered, breathing heavily through his fear. "The vans were marked with the insignia of the Marcone family. They didn't just rescue him. Malcolm hired the Marcone private army. They’ve already moved on your estate in New York."

Dwight slammed the phone down, the screen shattering against the car's leather console. He turned toward the window, watching the grey Swiss rain run down the glass. The war had arrived at his doorstep.

"Step on it," Dwight growled to the driver. "We have a family to execute."
