Chapter 1 - The Echo of Glass and Guilt

The penthouse bedroom hung suspended over the midnight skyline, a gilded cage illuminated only by the restless city lights below. Adrian stood motionless near the panoramic window, his broad frame casting a long shadow across the hardwood. Against his chest, swaddled in spotless white cotton, rested a newborn girl whose rhythmic, shallow breathing seemed the only innocent rhythm in the room. His inked knuckles were pale from how tightly, yet delicately, he shielded her small head.

Across from him stood Clara, her posture rigid, her arms defensively folded beneath her chest. Four years apart had stripped them of their former ease, replacing it with sharp fractures. Her eyes flicked from the baby's downy brow to the nightstand, where two half-filled bottles of milk framed a wrinkled black-and-white sonogram.

"You should have asked why she was bleeding," Adrian whispered, his voice gritty with unspoken exhaustion.

Clara took half a step backward, shaking her head. "I saw what I saw. We can’t excuse that, Adrian. After four years of silence, you show up at my door, drag me into this tower, and expect me to overlook the bodies you leave in your wake?"

"She wasn't a victim of my choices, Clara," he growled low, tilting his face away so his breath wouldn't disturb the infant. "She died trying to bring this child to me. To us. The cartel tracked her because she stole the girl out of the compound before they could extinguish the line entirely."

Clara stared at him, tears stinging the corners of her eyes. "Whose child is she?"

Adrian walked toward the nightstand. His heavy ring brushed the sonogram. "Look at the stamp date on the scan. Four years ago. The week you vanished."

Clara froze. The date on the paper matched the final night they spent together before an explosion tore through their district. Before she could speak, a faint red laser dot glided over the glass window and stopped directly over Adrian’s heart.
