Chapter 7 - The Breached Threshold

"They didn't wait for dawn," Adrian hissed, pulling Clara behind a reinforced partition. He grabbed an assault rifle, slapping an extended magazine into the receiver. "Victor tracked the radio frequency."
A violent detonation blew the bunker’s outer blast vents inward. Smoke and flame rolled across the ceiling, setting off shrill fire sirens that drowned out Sarah's panicked cries. Shadows moved through the burning haze—men in tactical gear carrying suppressed submachine guns.
Adrian stepped out from behind cover with brutal precision. Three rapid shots dropped the point man instantly. He advanced through the corridor, using the smoke to mask his movement, eliminating targets with terrifying efficiency. Every step he took was designed to draw gunfire away from the corner where Clara crouched.
Clara clutched Sarah tightly against her chest, curling her body to form a human shield. A mercenary rounded the corner, his weapon raised, eyes scanning the dark alcove. He locked eyes with Clara and raised his barrel.
Without thinking, Clara grabbed an abandoned oxygen cylinder off the tool rack, swinging it with all her strength against the soldier's knee. The man collapsed with a curse, and before he could recover, Adrian’s shadow fell over him like an executioner’s axe.

Adrian grabbed Clara's arm, hauling her toward the rear drainage shaft. "The docks are surrounded! Our only way out is across the open water!"
Behind them, through the shattered vault door, rolled a canister of tear gas, followed by the heavy thud of combat boots.
