Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Circuit

The backup generators hummed to life three seconds later, casting a dull amber emergency glow across the expansive foyer. In that brief window of darkness, Julian had vanished from the threshold. The heavy mahogany doors swung slightly in the afternoon breeze, left completely ajar.

""Security!"" Marcus roared, his composed facade shattering into primal fury.

Two armed guards in dark uniforms sprinted into the foyer from the west corridor, sidearms drawn. ""Sir! The perimeter grid just tripped on the north fence!"" one shouted.

""Seal the estate gates! No one leaves!"" Marcus barked, moving swiftly toward the security alcove beneath the main stairs. ""Send two men to protect Leo and Elena in the master suite. If anyone approaches that door without clearance, put them down.""

Victoria stood frozen near the bottom step, clutching her golden dress around her knees. ""Marcus, you’re losing your mind. Julian probably panicked because you looked like you were going to kill him!""

Marcus ignored her, wrenching open the heavy steel door of the mansion’s primary security terminal. The multi-monitor array flickered as the local server rebooted. His personal chief of security, a former federal agent named Frank Miller, was already slumped over the console, unconscious, a syringe mark weeping clear fluid on the side of his neck.

Marcus lunged forward, checking Miller's pulse. Weak, but steady.

He shoved Miller aside and hammered keys on the mechanical keyboard, bringing up the localized hard-drive cache that wasn't connected to the cloud. He bypassed the recent blackout and rewound the footage from the grand staircase just ten minutes prior.

There on the high-definition feed was Leo, clutching his toy car near the balustrade. Victoria had walked up behind him, paused, and placed both hands firmly on his small shoulders before shoving him down the incline.

Marcus felt the blood drain from his face, replaced by a cold, venomous rage. But before he could step out of the booth to confront his wife, the secondary screen flashed an automated archive warning.
