Chapter 9 - The Basement Threat

Marcus dropped the receiver onto its cradle. His breathing was shallow, his chest tight. He had built an empire worth billions, had outmaneuvered cutthroat cartels and international corporate raiders, but none of it mattered against the visceral terror of his child being held hostage by invisible wires.
He grabbed Victoria by the collar of her sequined gown and hauled her toward the service elevator. ""Where is the detonator?""
""I don't have it!"" she sobbed, stumbling as her high heels caught on the edge of the hallway runner. ""Julian has the primary remote! He set the charges three days ago under the pretense of inspecting the foundation water pipes!""
They reached the sub-basement stairwell. Marcus shoved Victoria through the reinforced steel door, following her down the concrete steps into the cool, subterranean air. The lower level smelled of damp stone and machine oil.
At the end of the concrete corridor stood the reinforced vault door of the panic room. The digital keypad was glowing green, indicating Elena and Leo were safely sealed inside.
Beside the door frame, mounted directly onto the primary load-bearing pillar of the estate, was a small black plastic casing with a blinking red LED diode. A military-grade C4 block, wired directly into the mansion's main gas intake line.
If that charge blew, the entire west wing of the estate would collapse into a fiery crater, crushing the subterranean vault under hundreds of tons of rubble.
Marcus stepped toward the device. A digital timer on the casing displayed twenty-seven minutes and fourteen seconds, counting down in bright crimson digits.
""Marcus, don't touch it!"" Victoria screamed, backing against the wall. ""It's anti-tamper! If you cut the wrong wire, it will trigger immediately!""
Marcus examined the detonator housing. His training in the naval reserves twenty years ago felt distant, but the schematics of modern commercial explosives remained fundamentally the same. The housing was sealed with security screws, but a secondary receiver wire ran directly into the mansion's automated HVAC system.
Julian hadn't just set a timer. He had slaved the detonator to an environmental sensor.
Marcus pulled out his phone. He had only one option to disarm it without detonating the estate—he needed Julian's transmitter frequency, which was currently speeding toward the private airstrip twenty miles away.
He turned to Victoria, his eyes completely hollow of mercy. ""Get in the vault.""
May you like
""What?"" she gasped.
""You're going to sit in that room with the bomb on the other side of the wall,"" Marcus said, dragging her toward the secondary airlock door. ""If I don't stop that plane, you die with everything else you tried to destroy.""
