Chapter 1 - Fractures on the Parquet

The crash did not sound like fine china; it sounded like bone snapping beneath stone. When Elena’s forearms finally gave out, thirty-two heirloom Limoges plates cascaded across the herringbone mahogany floor, sending razor-sharp shards into the damask drapes and skimming over the polished toes of Victoria Sterling’s Italian pumps. Elena hit her knees instantly, ignoring the sting of porcelain biting into her palms, her breath catching in ragged, terrified hitches.
Across the threshold stood Julian, the platter of trembling tea candles still suspended between his hands. The glow lit his jaw, tight and ridged with fury, not at the fallen ceramic, but at the woman standing rigid before it. Victoria did not flinch. She simply smoothed the skirt of her burgundy wool dress, her pearl choker catching the low chandelier light like a string of small, polished teeth.

"Careless," Victoria whispered, the word sharp enough to pierce the settling dust. "From the gutter, and returning to it."
Julian set the tray down on the console table with deliberate stillness. When he stepped forward, the floorboards didn't creak, but the air shifted violently. "That’s enough, Mother." He knelt directly beside Elena, his olive sleeve brushing her trembling shoulder, extending a hand not to collect the fragments of his family’s wealth, but to pull her fingers away from the blood-slick porcelain. Elena kept her head bowed, terrified that meeting his eyes would make her eviction official, but Julian’s voice stayed low, textured with quiet defiance. "Get up, Elena. Leave the mess. You’re done serving for tonight."
