Chapter 6 - The Smell of Green Pine

The morning smelled of wet sawdust, diesel fumes, and raw mountain pine. Julian’s truck pulled into the clearing of the Blackwood Mill, an abandoned brick-and-timber textile complex that was currently being gutted to create twenty-four affordable family units and a community workshop. For Elena, the noise of circular saws and shouting framers was a shock of raw vitality compared to the suffocating quiet of the Sterling estate.

Julian walked her through the concrete-floored administrative shed. Blueprints covered the drafting tables, weighed down by rusted bolts and coffee mugs.

"This isn't charity work," Julian told her, spreading out a site roster. "We have sixteen local families applying for residency who speak three different dialects, and four subcontractors trying to short our lumber specs. I need someone who knows how to spot deception, manage inventory, and handle high-pressure schedules."

Elena ran her fingertips over the fibrous surface of the architectural drawings. The ink showed sunlit courtyards, cross-ventilated living rooms, and open communal kitchens. "I’ve spent seven years checking wine vintages and tracking silvers. I don't know architecture."

"You know how people operate when they feel powerful, and when they feel helpless," Julian said, offering her a hard hat. "That makes you better at this than any project manager I’ve hired from Boston."
