Chapter 15 - The Unbroken Dawn

Victoria looked at the silver thermos, then at Elena’s face. For the first time, there were no defenses left to raise. Her lips parted, but no sharp words came out. Instead, a single, heavy tear escaped her eye, rolling slowly through the powder on her cheek and dropping onto the cold mahogany table.

"I have nothing left," Victoria whispered. "They’re boarding the windows next week."

"Then you will find a small room somewhere," Elena said, her tone neither harsh nor pitying, simply honest. "You will learn how to boil your own water. You will learn how to wash your own dishes. And you will discover that survival does not require an audience."

Elena stepped back toward the doorway, pausing with her hand resting against the archway. "Julian is at the mill. If you need shelter, the housing trust has a single-occupancy unit reserved for senior hardship cases. You have to fill out the paperwork yourself, and you have to clean your own floor. But it is warm, and the roof does not leak."

Victoria did not answer, but her hands slowly reached forward, her trembling fingers wrapping around the warmth of the steel thermos.

Elena walked out into the clearing dawn. The rain had stopped, and across the horizon, a brilliant band of pale gold light cut through the retreating storm clouds. She climbed into her truck, started the engine, and drove down the hill toward the valley—toward the hum of hammers, the laughter of new neighbors, and a life she had built with her own two hands.
