Chapter 12 - Building New Foundations

Winter broke over the valley with heavy, pristine snows, but the interior work on the mill continued without pause. Elena became the official site director, managing a team of twelve and coordinating the direct move-in dates for the first wave of residents. She rented a small, sunlight-drenched second-floor apartment over a cobbler's shop in town, painting the walls warm ochre and filling the windowsills with potted geraniums.

Julian remained on site nearly every day. Their professional cadence had deepened into something quiet, grounded, and intensely mutual. There were no dramatic declarations, no sudden displays of affection; instead, there was a steady, unyielding respect.

One evening, while checking the installation of pine kitchen counters in Unit 4, Julian paused beside her. He reached out, his thumb gently brushing a streak of pale plaster dust from her cheekbone.

"What are you doing when the ribbon-cutting happens next month?" he asked, his voice low, intimate in the empty room.

Elena paused, looking at his calm, open expression. "I was offered a position with the regional housing trust. Managing their projects across two counties."

Julian smiled, his eyes creasing at the corners with unreserved warmth. "I know. I wrote your recommendation letter. But I was asking what you were doing the evening after that."

"Dinner," Elena said, her lips curving upward. "Somewhere without a single candle or a single antique plate."
