Chapter 14 - Echoes of the Past

That evening, the grand manor was quiet. The guests had gone, the staff had retired, and the vast estate rested under a sky studded with brilliant winter stars.

Julian found Emily in Noah’s nursery on the second floor. A fire crackled softly in the brick hearth, casting a warm amber glow over the pastel walls, the soft rugs, and the wooden toys scattered neatly in wicker baskets.

Emily was rocking Noah in the wooden rocking chair, humming the very same lullaby she had breathed into his ear on the night of the storm. Noah was fast asleep, his chest rising and falling in deep, rhythmic perfection, his tiny fingers curled around the hem of Emily’s sleeve.

Julian leaned against the doorframe, watching them in silence for several minutes. The sight no longer brought the sharp pang of grief it once did; instead, it filled him with an enduring, peaceful warmth.

"He’s completely out," Julian whispered, stepping quietly into the room.

"He played hard today," Emily whispered back with a smile, carefully transferring the sleeping boy into his crib. She pulled the soft flannel blanket up to his shoulders and kissed his forehead before turning around.

They walked out onto the second-floor terrace, looking out over the moonlit gardens and the quiet valley below. A gentle, cool breeze stirred the pine branches.

"The medical center is going to change thousands of lives, Emily," Julian said, leaning his forearms on the stone balustrade. "Dr. Hayes told me today that three infants in the trial unit were successfully stabilized using the neonatal touch protocol you designed."

Emily wrapped her woolen shawl tighter around her shoulders. "It wasn't my protocol, Julian. It’s what women have done for ten thousand years. We just forgot how to listen to our hands because we rely so much on our screens."

"You could run the entire state pediatric outreach program if you wanted to," Julian noted, turning to look at her profile. "The board offered you the directorship this morning."

Emily shook her head gently, looking out into the night. "My place is here, Julian. Watching Noah grow. Helping you teach him that kindness is not weakness."
